Her Story

About Debra

I have been advocating for over 20 years since losing my only son to gun violence. I interview survivors and work on legislation like taxing the gun industry for Wisconsin's budget. My faith keeps me going despite the emotional toll of hearing survivor stories.

Ten minutes with Debra

01What do you attribute your success to?

Whatever is meant for you is meant for you. I took off for four and a half years and drove commercially cross-country. When I was ready to return, my advocacy work picked right back up. You can take a break, slow down, or stop for a while to take care of yourself.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take time for yourself, have a mentor, and surround yourself not only with those who have similar experiences but also with your family, because you need family time otherwise you'll get lost in your work.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Receiving calls all day from survivors because I shared my cell phone number. I need to add a second line to create boundaries for when I receive calls.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being empathetic and genuinely caring. My faith is essential, because without it there's no way I'd still be standing.
