Her Story

About Debra

Debra is a registered dental hygienist with more than four decades of experience in private clinical practice and a lifelong commitment to patient care and professional excellence. After graduating from dental hygiene school in 1974, she joined the Peace Corps and spent a year in Ecuador working in a dental program, an experience that deepened her passion for service and community health. Upon returning to the United States, she began a long and successful career in her hometown dental practice, where she worked for 30 years before continuing an additional 10 years after the practice transitioned to new ownership and expanded operations.

Throughout her career, Debra built a reputation for compassionate care, clinical precision, and dedication to helping patients maintain lifelong oral health. Her decades of hands-on experience provided her with extensive expertise in dental hygiene procedures, patient education, and the evolving standards of modern dental practice. In 2017, she further expanded her professional and personal growth by earning a degree in Leadership from Wittenberg University, graduating magna cum laude in a writing-intensive program that strengthened her communication and leadership skills.

Currently, Debra is exploring a new chapter in her career by pursuing adjunct clinical teaching opportunities in dental hygiene programs at community colleges. After recently stepping away from practice to assist her family and care for her granddaughter, she is eager to mentor the next generation of dental hygienists through hands-on clinical instruction. She is passionate about helping students develop strong patient-care skills, proper clinical techniques, and the confidence needed to succeed in the profession she has proudly served for more than 40 years.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Debra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, dedication, a lifelong eagerness to learn through continuing education, and a genuine passion for making a positive difference in the lives of others through both my career and volunteer work.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to pursue what truly drives and inspires you, surround yourself with positive and supportive people, and always lead by example.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to never give up, keep pushing forward through challenges, always stay open to learning new things, and take pride in your work and accomplishments.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in dental hygiene right now is the growing need for experienced clinical supervisors and adjunct instructors at community colleges and local training programs. At the same time, a challenge in the field is that many full-time classroom teaching positions require a master’s degree, which can limit opportunities for highly experienced professionals with bachelor’s degrees to adjunct and clinical instruction roles.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are family, service, compassion, and helping others, which is why I was proud to step away from my career temporarily to care for my granddaughter while continuing to support my community through volunteerism.
