Dr. Debra King, PhD, LPCS, LCMHC, LAC, CEAP, is an accomplished executive leader in behavioral health program development and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiatives. With over 30 years of experience as a psychology professor and clinician, she has dedicated her career to advancing mental health care and training the next generation of professionals. Licensed as a clinician in 1996 and as a supervisor in 2001, Dr. King has cultivated a rare blend of academic rigor and clinical expertise that informs her leadership across the behavioral health landscape.

As Chief Clinical Officer at Family Care Services, Inc., Dr. King oversees comprehensive programs specializing in rehabilitative behavioral health, counseling, public health, health information technology, business, and social work. She is passionate about mentoring undergraduate and graduate interns, preparing them to become skilled professionals capable of addressing complex mental health challenges. In her role, she emphasizes evidence-based practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of programs that improve outcomes for diverse populations.

Currently serving as Regional Program Director at the South Carolina Department of Children's Advocacy — Continuum of Care, Dr. King continues to shape regional mental health initiatives while providing management consulting, corporate training, and public speaking services. She holds a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia and continuously enhances her professional expertise through courses in leadership, communication, and Lean Six Sigma principles. Her career reflects a steadfast commitment to excellence, mentorship, and transforming behavioral health care through innovation and compassionate leadership.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my genuine love for the work I do and my passion for helping others in my community. Over the past 30 years, I have dedicated myself to my field, continuously seeking opportunities to make a meaningful impact. I actively support and collaborate with several charitable organizations, including Walt’s Waltz, One Quest, Inc., and Joanne’s Safe House in Spartanburg, SC, as part of my commitment to giving back and making a difference.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is that I can achieve any goal I set my mind to. With determination, focus, and perseverance, no aspiration is out of reach.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay the course and keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges. Hard work and perseverance truly pay off—I’ve dedicated myself to my career, and along the way, I’ve been honored twice in Who’s Who and recognized through nominations for Best Student and Most Academic Student. Success comes to those who remain committed and focused on their goals.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is being able to provide support, guidance, and assistance to everyone who may need it. At the same time, this presents an incredible opportunity to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives and strengthen the community through dedicated service.

The most important value to me in both my work and personal life is the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I strive to approach every opportunity with compassion, integrity, and a genuine commitment to helping people thrive.
