Her Story

About Deepa

I transitioned from being a software engineer with 11 plus years of experience in software development and project management to becoming a cake artist running my own business, Avish Creations. It's been 7 years as a business owner, and the journey has been wonderful and filled with a wide variety of things. I work from home as a home baker, which allows me to be with my family. My typical week involves client interactions and logging orders on Mondays and Tuesdays, along with design work. From Wednesday onwards, depending on when the cake order is going out, I do baking, create creams and different fillings, and prepare for assembly day. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are all about assembling, getting the kit ready, and sending it out. What makes my work unique is that I bring my engineering background into cake artistry - I utilize science and engineering to create cakes with special features like motion, magnetic effects, lighting effects, and even a bus cake that runs on remote. Structuring involves a lot of physics. Beyond my cake business, I serve as PTA president at my children's school, spending 4 to 5 hours a week planning, ensuring the team gets what's needed, and meeting with the school. I love what I do because it's about making special moments even more special - when those smiles and messages come from clients saying their unique cakes and flavors made their special occasion very special, and some have the cake as the showstopper, it brings a lot of impact on the community.

Ten minutes with Deepa

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I have seen a lot of women really struggle to come out of the house and do something else for themselves. I want to share my experience and the things that I have been doing to show them that it is not enough - you can do a lot more. It's just that you need to step out, take on things, and do it. I want more women to be really encouraged to take on whatever they want to do.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I really enjoy impacting my school community through my PTA work. At the end, it brings a lot of satisfaction that I contributed and gave back to the community. When it comes to cake artistry, I really enjoy the art part. When those smiles and messages come from clients about making their special occasion very special with unique cakes and flavors, and everybody loves it, and some have the showstopper as the cake - those things really bring a lot of impact on the community. It's more about making those special moments even more special. I love to volunteer and be part of committees that are more impacting and creating impactful sessions or events.
