Ten minutes with Deja

01What do you attribute your success to?

My parents pushed me to be the best I can be. I don't think I would be where I am without them. They have pushed me into where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't be afraid to try new things, don't be afraid to get your feet wet and try something that you never thought you would enjoy but you end up enjoying. Try to live outside your comfort zone.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to try new things. Don't be afraid to make a mistake or fail, because everybody fails. If you have to make a mistake in order to get back up again. So definitely don't be afraid to fail.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Biggest challenge is being a Black woman in the field - some people look down on women and especially Black women. Another challenge is people not wanting to hear you out even after doing the research. Biggest opportunity is being known as a journalist, being on camera and telling stories.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

As a broadcast journalist, the most important value is to get stories that are unheard out there. Every story has something that everybody needs to hear, whether struggles or achievements. Just inform the world.
