Deja Richards serves as an Executive Assistant in the Elections Division of the Texas Secretary of State in Austin, Texas. With five years of experience in government, she manages schedules and handles logistics for the head director, other managers, and attorneys in her office. She also assists the public with voter registration questions and election-related inquiries such as polling locations and voting issues, often acting as the primary go-to person for a wide range of operational needs. Richards earned her bachelor's degree in political science, with a minor in criminal justice and a pre-law concentration, from Sam Houston State University after first completing an associate's degree at a junior college. Her professional background includes prior roles as a legal assistant and campaign intern for the City of Houston mayor's re-election campaign as well as for a Texas senator. Outside her role, she serves as Operations Lead for the Austin-based organization No Girl Walks Alone, which builds community and provides safety for young women and college students through group walking activities. Richards aspires to advance into a chief of staff position and values maintaining strong relationships, helping others, integrity, and treating people equally.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Keep going and embrace being the go-to person without getting overwhelmed. Remain confident and do not be scared to be seen or feel visible. For the longest time I tried to stay invisible but the advice that helped most is do not be scared to be seen.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep your eyes on the prize even when things seem chaotic or you start overthinking what others might think. Wherever your passion resides, that is where your money will come. Do not let anyone deter you from what you want to do.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include adjusting to political changes and figures. Opportunities include room to grow into roles like chief of staff, election officials, directors or managers within Texas agencies.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Maintaining strong relationships and helping people with big or small projects. Having integrity and a good strong moral character. Treating people equally so no one feels left out.
