Her Story
About Delaney
I work two jobs that I'm passionate about - I'm an accountant for an energy company through Tesla, and I'm also an inner-city school counselor working with K through 6 students on the west side of Columbus. The area is heavy with trauma and poverty, and we work through that as a team. I've been in counseling for 5 years total. What inspired me to do both was that I think people try to box women into either having to do this or that, but I loved numbers and knew I was smart, and I also loved children and being with people in their most vulnerable moments. I wanted to give them help by having someone walk alongside them in whatever life has thrown at them. The opportunity presented itself to do both things, so I thought, why not? It doesn't really feel like work because I love it so much. It feels like I'm just making my contribution in society the way that I know I've been gifted to do. Everything I do is for the glory of God and the good of people, and I really try to take that with me as I'm interacting with everyone.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Delaney
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my faith is probably the number one pillar, and then I would say my parents really instilled the values of hard work, integrity, honesty, and loyalty in me as a kid. They really hammered into me that this is how you conduct your work - everything you do is for the glory of God and the good of people, and I really try to take that quote with me as I'm interacting with everyone. I'm a Christian, and I try my best to show what the true gospel looks like - to love someone, show up for people, and love other people more than yourself. So everything I do is for the glory of God and the good of people.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to really prioritize the things about you that make you good at the job. In your love for the job, you can sometimes lose yourself, and then you lose the magic that you bring to those areas of expertise. So really make sure that you know and you're very aware of your strengths and your weaknesses, and you're always keeping a finger on the pulse of how you're doing, so you can still show up for the people you promised to show up that way for.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say definitely honesty and loyalty. I think that those two things sum up everything else - integrity, all the things. They build the foundation for relationships to be a centerpiece in your life, good ones. My parents really instilled these values in me, along with hard work, and I conduct my work with the belief that everything you do is for the glory of God and the good of people. I try to show what it really looks like to love someone, show up for people, and love other people more than yourself.
