About Demetriss

I've been in customer service for over 25 years. I started at Orangeburg Mental Health as an administrative specialist working the front desk for over a year. An opportunity came up and I took on the role of entitlement specialist because I have a passion for helping patients and the community. My typical day involves assisting patients with applying for disability, Social Security, Medicaid, food stamps, and other eligible resources. I am motivated by helping people feel good about themselves and succeed in life, which led me to pursue my education while working here.

I attribute my success to perseverance, a strong work ethic and a commitment to lifelong learning throughout my career. I have remained focus on personal and professional growth even when faced with challenges, I believe success is not achieved overnight, but through consistent effort, dedication, and willingness to learn from every experience. I am also grateful for the support of my family, mentors and colleagues who have encouraged me along the way, their guidance combined with my passion for helping others has motivated me to continue advancing both professionally and academically. Earning my bachelor of science in human resource management and pursuing my master of science in human resource management degree are milestones that reflect my belief that growth and development never stop. Most importantly, I attribute my success to staying true to my values of integrity, compassion and service. These principles have guided my decisions, strengthen my relationships and inspired me to make a positive impact in the workplace and the community.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to never stop learning and never let your current position define your future. Potential growth happens when you are willing to step outside of your comfort zone embrace new challenges, and investing, your personal and professional development. This advice has guided me throughout my career and educational journey. It encouraged me to pursue my degree in human resource management and continue my education through a masters program. It also reminds me that success is not about where you start, but about your willingness to keep growing adapting and striving toward your goals. Every experience whether success or a setback is an opportunity to learn and move forward.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the human resource field is to believe in your abilities, remain confident in your voice and never stop learning. Human resources is a profession built on relationships, integrity, and continuous growth so it is important to develop strong communication skills, stay informed about workplace trends and employment laws and seek opportunities to expand your knowledge. Do not be afraid to take on new challenges or pursue positions that stretch your skills. Some of the most valuable professional growth comes from experiences that push you outside of your comfort zone. I also encourage young women to find mentors, building meaningful professional networks, and learn from those who have traveled the path before them, most importantly, remember that your perspective and contributions matter, lead with professionalism, empathy, and integrity, and focus on making positive impacts on the people and organizations you serve. Success is a journey and every step forward is an opportunity to grow and make a difference.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in the human resources field right now is the ability to help organizations build stronger, more inclusive and more engaged workplaces. HR professionals are playing a strategic role in talent development, employee engagement, leadership development, and organizational culture as the workplace continues to evolve. HR has a unique opportunity to influence positive change and support both employees and business goals at the same time. One of the biggest challenges is attracting, developing and training talent in a highly competitive labor market. Organizations must adapt to changing employee expectations regarding work-life balance, career growth, flexibility, and workplace well-being. HR professionals must also navigate evolving employment laws, technological advancements and workforce diversity while ensuring compliance and fostering a positive working environment. I believe these challenges also create opportunities for innovation. HR leaders who embrace continuous learning, leverage technology effectively, and prioritize the employee experience, will be well positioned to help their organization succeed in the future.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, compassion, respect, and continuous growth. I believe integrity is the foundation of trust and guide me to do what is right even when no one is watching. Compassion allows me to connect with others, understand different perspectives and support those around me with empathy and kindness.

Respect is another value that I hold closely. I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity weather in the workplace at home or within the community. Building positive relationships starts with listening, understanding and valuing the contributions of others. Finally, I am committed to continuous growth. I believe learning is a lifelong journey, and I strive to improve both personally and professionally through education, new experiences and meaningful challenges. These values have shaped who I am today and continue to guide the decisions I make in every aspect of my life.
