Her Interview
Ten minutes with Denise
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to staying curious, listening closely, and never treating someoneβs career as a formula. My years in human resources taught me to look beyond titles and rΓ©sumΓ©s and understand how leadership, judgment, influence, and potential are really evaluated.
I have also benefited tremendously from the training, collaboration, and support of the Career Thought Leaders (CTL) community. Being surrounded by professionals who are committed to learning, sharing ideas, and raising the standard of the work has helped me continue to grow and evolve. That foundation, combined with the trust my clients place in me and my commitment to giving them honest, thoughtful guidance, has shaped everything I have built.
02Whatβs the best career advice youβve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to know my value, but never assume other people will automatically see it. You have to understand your audience, recognize what matters to them, and communicate your experience in a way that connects your value to their needs. That lesson has shaped both my own career and the work I do with clients every day.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Build real expertise, stay curious, and do not be afraid to develop a point of view. This industry is always changing, especially as AI reshapes how people work, communicate, and make career decisions. The professionals who will stand out are the ones who keep learning while also understanding that technology cannot replace judgment, empathy, and experience.
I would also tell young women to find their tribe. Surround yourself with people who will support you, challenge you, tell you the truth when you need to hear it, and remind you of your value when you forget it. The right people can serve as mentors, sounding boards, accountability partners, and your strongest advocates.
Do not wait until you feel completely ready to speak up, lead, or pursue an opportunity. Confidence grows through doing the work, learning from others, and being willing to keep evolving.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is also one of its greatest opportunities: artificial intelligence. AI is changing how people search for opportunities, how organizations evaluate talent, and what leaders need to demonstrate to remain relevant. It can make the process faster, but it can also create more noise, more generic messaging, and a false sense that technology can replace strategy, judgment, or human connection.
The opportunity is to help people use AI thoughtfully while becoming even clearer about the value only they can bring. Career professionals must continue evolving beyond traditional services and serve as strategic advisors who help clients understand their audience, communicate their leadership value, and make informed decisions in a rapidly changing market. The future of this field is not about choosing between technology and human expertise. It is about knowing how to use both responsibly and effectively.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is at the center of both my work and my personal life. I believe in being honest, doing what I say I will do, and giving people the guidance they need, even when it may not be what they expected to hear. Trust is earned, and I never take lightly the trust that clients, colleagues, friends, and family place in me.
I also value curiosity, continuous growth, and generosity. I believe we have a responsibility to keep learning, challenge our own thinking, and share what we know in ways that help others move forward. Just as important are loyalty and community. I value the people who support me, challenge me, keep me grounded, and allow me to do the same for them. Whether in business or in life, I want my work and my relationships to be guided by honesty, respect, and a genuine desire to make a meaningful difference.
