Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of skill, compassion, and the relationships that have shaped my journey. For over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of supporting patients and colleagues alike—first as a Laboratory Assistant Supervisor at UNC Wayne Healthcare in North Carolina, and now as a Laboratory Coordinator for research in Florida. My passion for this field began during my studies in biology at Bennett College, inspired by my late best friend, Miriam Brody, and guided by mentors like Gatheny Hill and Gail Rogers. Their influence showed me the profound impact one woman can have on another’s path.

While I take pride in performing procedures with care and ease, I measure my true success by the people I’ve supported and the teams I’ve led. Retiring from UNC Wayne, I was humbled to see the enduring connections I had built—former staff still reach out, inviting me to their retirements, a testament to the positive culture and proactive leadership I strive to cultivate.

Ultimately, my career has been about more than procedures and protocols; it’s about fostering growth, offering guidance, and leaving a lasting, meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is simple: radiate positive energy, uphold unwavering professionalism, and always do what’s right, even when it’s difficult. Success isn’t just measured in procedures or results—it’s measured in the community you build, the trust you earn, and the lives you touch along the way.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are compassion, integrity, and dedication. I strive to lead with empathy, make ethical decisions, and leave a positive impact on everyone I encounter. Outside of work, I cherish spending time with my five grandchildren and exploring new places through travel—these moments keep me grounded, inspired, and full of energy.
