I entered the trucking industry about 10 years ago when my husband, who was driving for Arizona at the time, suggested I look into dispatching or freight brokering. I had never heard of freight brokering before, but as a single parent with two children, I needed something flexible that would allow me to pick up my kids from school and make sure they came home to a meal. I started making deliveries out of my car for Tiff's Treats, delivering cookies. I love telling people this story because my first week I made $360, and I was really persistent and stayed in contact with the owner of the company. I was making anywhere from $5 to $20 off of each delivery depending on what area I drove in. Within about four weeks, I went from making $360 to $600 a week. I started expanding my delivery services to include alarm systems for people's houses and medical supplies. I went from making $300 to $600 to $1,000 a week, and eventually $1,700 a week, all by using my personal vehicle. Today, I'm a freight broker and I'm not driving anymore. I have my own warehousing system where I work with companies and ship things from my home.
