Her Story

About Deondra

Deondra Sexton is an attorney and Social Security representative practicing in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Licensed in the state since 2020, she focuses her practice on Social Security Disability, criminal law, and family law. She earned degrees from Shaw University and Charlotte School of Law and maintains active memberships in the South Carolina Bar Association and NOSCR, the National Social Security Representative organization. Prior to entering private practice, Sexton spent over a decade with the Social Security Administration, where she implemented processes to expedite disability claims. She now represents clients at the hearing level and reports winning more cases than she loses. In addition to her legal work, Sexton volunteers with the Women's Shelter and previously served as public defender for the Rock Hill Homeless Court. She attributes her professional success to her determination as a teenage mother to provide every advantage for her twin daughters, both of whom have earned master's degrees and built successful careers. Sexton advises young women entering the profession to pursue their passions, work hard while protecting their energy, and prioritize doing what is right over financial gain.

Ten minutes with Deondra

01What do you attribute your success to?

My daughters. I had them young as a teenage mother and was determined that they would not be disadvantaged by having only one parent. I wanted to give them all the advantages that any other child had. Both of my daughters have master's degrees and are successful women.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Go with what you're passionate about. Don't do what family wants you to do or chase after money. The passion is what's going to drive the work ethic. Work hard, play hard, take time out for yourself. Protect your energy and space from negative people.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include the political aspect depending on who the president is and the Social Security Commissioner, which determines workload and precedent. Opportunities are always there to serve people, and if you chase doing what's right rather than financial benefit, you will be rewarded by helping someone.
