DeShanda Carter is a trailblazing entrepreneur, public servant, and advocate for women’s empowerment. She currently serves as the Orange County Legislator for District 11 in New York, making history as the first African American to hold this legislative position in the county. In addition to her public service, DeShanda is the CEO of Simply Carter Corp, the parent company for multiple ventures including The Carter Brand, Simply Carter’s Diva Glam Mobile Party, and Simply Carter’s Kids Car Service. Through her work, she focuses on helping women discover their passion and achieve personal and professional growth.

With over two decades of entrepreneurial experience, DeShanda has also built Carters Caring Hands INC., providing essential personal care services to seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Her leadership experience extends to her prior role as Captain at the New York City Corrections Department, where she oversaw daily operations, managed staff and inmate movement, and served as a first responder to facility alarms. DeShanda’s diverse background demonstrates her ability to lead with integrity, innovation, and a commitment to community service.

Beyond her professional and civic work, DeShanda is an author, radio personality, actress, and licensed life insurance agent. She has published works including Seven Reasons Women Should Start a Business and Seven Ways to Retire, and she actively engages audiences through her YouTube channel, Simply Carter Corp. DeShanda’s career reflects her dedication to mentorship, empowerment, and creating opportunities for others while breaking barriers and setting new standards of leadership.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to accept that failure and disappointment are part of the journey—and to keep moving forward regardless.

One of the biggest challenges in my field is overthinking, but I believe that opportunities will always come for those who stay persistent and focused.
