Her Interview
Ten minutes with Destiny
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the tenacity and determination I have developed from a young age. I have always challenged myself to become the best version of myself and to build a life and career I can be proud of. Early on, I learned the value of hard work through academics, pushing myself to excel in school and understanding that dedication and persistence lead to meaningful achievements. During my college years, I continued to prioritize academic excellence while expanding my focus to professional growth through opportunities such as the Business Honors Program, workshops, and on-campus roles as a peer mentor and academic peer coach. As I transitioned into my professional career at Optum, I approached each opportunity with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and the determination to overcome challenges. As the youngest member of my team, I have consistently pushed myself to demonstrate my value, contribute meaningful solutions, and grow as a professional, which has been reflected through accomplishments such as earning the Quality and Performance Award.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to not be so hard on myself, especially early in my career. My mentors in college reminded me that growth takes time and that I should recognize the progress I am making rather than focusing only on what I still have to learn. When I began my role at Optum, I was surrounded by team members with decades of experience, which initially made me question my own abilities and feel overwhelmed by how much I had to learn. Over time, I realized that my lack of experience does not limit my ability to succeed. Instead, I have learned to rely on my strengths by staying accountable, leading with integrity, communicating effectively, and maintaining a willingness to learn and grow. Embracing this mindset has allowed me to become a more confident project manager and continue developing both personally and professionally.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The healthcare industry is facing significant challenges, including rising medical and pharmacy costs that continue to outpace inflation, workforce shortages, clinician burnout, and barriers to accessing care. Many individuals, particularly younger populations, rely on emergency services due to social and economic factors that limit their ability to access preventive and ongoing healthcare resources. At the same time, these challenges create opportunities for innovation through solutions such as negotiated savings programs, digital pharmacy tools like OptumRx, artificial intelligence, and automation to streamline administrative processes and improve efficiency. There is also growing opportunity to strengthen community health by investing in programs that address social determinants of health, including food security and housing stability, helping create a more accessible and sustainable healthcare system.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are authenticity, communication, and growth. As I continue navigating new experiences and challenges, I believe it is important to remain true to myself while being open to learning and adapting. I often reflect on three questions: Did I stay aligned with who I am? Did I take the time to understand the situation by asking thoughtful questions and having honest conversations? Did I grow from the experience in a way that helps me become a better version of myself moving forward? These values guide how I approach challenges, build relationships, and continue developing both personally and professionally.
