Her Story

About Detria

Detria Russaw serves as the senior recruiter for Houston Methodist Continuing Care, the smallest hospital in the Houston Methodist system in Houston, Texas. She began her career in recruiting in 1999 while pursuing studies in business management. After an opportunity arose, she left recruiting to take a manager position at Aramark, where she led teams for 13 years in a high-turnover support services area. In 2021, she returned to human resources and recruiting at Houston Methodist, where she now handles all recruitment needs as the sole recruiter for clinical, support services, allied health, and leadership positions. Russaw holds a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's degree in healthcare administration. Her notable achievement includes successfully replacing all travel nurses with 95 full-time hires over nearly two years, eliminating the use of travel staff by December 2024. She attributes her professional success to her own determination and hard work, having raised four children by the age of 25 while completing her education through a non-traditional path. Russaw draws on her management experience to excel in building relationships with candidates and hiring leaders, and she is currently pursuing a leadership role in human resources.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Detria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute all my success unselfishly to myself, because I always knew I had to work harder. I had four children by the age of 25 and knew I wanted to graduate from college. I didn't go the traditional way but I just knew I had to work hard and that's what I did.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When I was a new manager, I was trained by a very experienced manager who told me that my first year of managing is going to feel like 10 years of experience, and it really did. Managing people teaches you so much about life.
