About Devara

Dev Berger serves as managing editor and public relations director for the California Retired Public Employee Association, a nonprofit that advocates for public employees on issues including pensions and health benefits. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's in public administration from the University of Southern California in 1975. Her professional path has included serving as a Senate fellow in the California legislature addressing health policy and long-term care, working as a writer-editor for organizations such as the California Professional Firefighters and CalSTRS, acting as the state's health planner for long-term care, and managing health legislation at CalPERS. After caring for her husband through Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, she launched a health policy consulting business for ten years before returning to state service. Now retired from government, she continues her advocacy through her current role at the association, where she has expanded its media presence and supported investigations into pension system accountability. Berger identifies as a writer, journalist, and activist for aging, long-term care, public pensions, and health issues, driven by values of compassion and helping others.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Devara

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You gotta follow your heart first. Every young person... if you love animals go find out from non-profits what you can do to volunteer. Healthcare go find out about volunteering and internships. Start going out there and finding out what opportunities exist at all different levels... do it for things you love... think what you love and then go from there.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

People can have healthy lives and that our economic system would improve to address critical issues like everybody should have affordable healthcare, everybody should have affordable housing. I grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood... everything in my life, whether it's religion, spirituality, work and job pretty much center around helping other people. The big things that drive me are compassion and love.
