About Devika
I work on the Treasury team at Remitly, which is a cross-border payments company. We primarily serve immigrants all across the world to send money back home to their loved ones. In my current role, I work on strategic initiatives that impact the Treasury team, as well as capital markets. What led me here was honestly the mission of this company. I'm an immigrant myself, and I very much identified with the mission that our founder had. A typical day would look like evaluating the financial profile of a partner we're trying to work with, analyzing their creditworthiness, understanding the risk that they pose to our company. It would be supporting any of the capital markets initiatives that we are looking to do as a company, whether that's evaluating whether to take on more debt, or to return value to shareholders. It would look like preparing board materials for that, and essentially ensuring that we are pursuing the right initiatives as a team. It also involves coaching and mentoring others on the team, whether in finance or otherwise, ensuring we're working towards a unified goal. My main area of expertise is in finance transformations, as well as program management and risk.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I'll give you the three biggest pieces of advice I received. One is, just show up. Especially when I was younger in my career, I was always told to just show up, whether that means that you're an attendee at a meeting, and you're furiously taking notes, it's just as important to show up. The second is, don't shy away from quantitative types of work, and so while it might feel a little intimidating at the beginning, it actually really helps you understand a lot if you are willing to dive into numbers. And then the third was genuinely, make sure that you praise people even if they're not in the room. And ensure that if somebody has done something for you, or gone out of their way to do something for you at work, ensure that you pass that recognition up, because otherwise, a lot of the times, people who do the work don't get recognition, and so you should do what you can to recognize folks when they go out of their way to help you.
