Her Story
About Diana
Diana Duran is the Director of Development and External Relations at Breakthrough Greater Boston, a nonprofit organization focused on increasing opportunities in education for underrepresented and resource-limited students in the Boston area. In this role, she connects donors, volunteers, and corporations with the organization's programs, serving as a bridge between external supporters and community initiatives. Duran has worked in the nonprofit sector for 4 years in the United States and 6 to 8 years in her home country of Colombia. She holds a master's degree, which she pursued after moving to the United States. Her commitment to education stems from her own experiences growing up in Colombia, where she credits access to education for opening doors that would otherwise have been unavailable. Duran began volunteering at age 12, serving meals at a church with her parents, and continued creating community projects during high school. She advises those entering the field to lead with empathy, go into the community, and work alongside people rather than from a desk.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Lead with empathy. Go to the community, walk with them, live their real experience. Put yourself in other people's shoes. Nonprofit work cannot be done from a desk. Be ready to put your sneakers on and go through the places that you work on, work with people at the same level.
