Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my lifelong passion for scientific discovery and my commitment to staying active and engaged in meaningful work. With more than six decades of experience in laboratory research, I began my career at the Medical College of Virginia and later contributed to early transplant research at Medical College of Virginia in the first Histocompatibility/Immunology lab in the world. We worked with transplant centers at Duke, Emory, Tampa General and UCLA helping them to set up their own labs. Worked with heart surgeon at MCV, doing research on viability of hearts during transport, tests on his patients undergoing open heart surgery. Also ran the perfusion pump several days a week along with a nurse and student. For the past 28 years, I’ve continued my work in my current lab position, with no plans of slowing down. Staying busy keeps me healthy and happy—I’ve always believed that purpose drives vitality. In fact, one of my closest friends, now 99, still holds three jobs, which continues to inspire me every day.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My father told me that as long as I was passionate about my work that it's not just a job. To always do what I love. To keep doing it for as long as Im able!!!!

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is simple: don’t stop doing what you love. Find work or activities that bring you purpose and fulfillment—whether that’s through your career, volunteering, or continuing to learn new things. Staying active, both mentally and physically, is the key to staying young at heart and maintaining a lifelong sense of curiosity and passion.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The field has changed tremendously, especially with the rise of technology and automation. While these advancements have brought efficiency and precision, I still prefer manual analysis because it keeps your skills sharper and your mind fully engaged. There’s something deeply valuable about understanding the process hands-on—it not only strengthens your expertise but also preserves the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that define true scientific work.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are purpose, connection, and service. Staying busy keeps me happy and healthy—I’ve seen too many people slow down and lose their spark after retiring. I’m inspired by a dear friend of mine who is 99 years old and still holds three jobs; her energy motivates me to keep going. I truly value the relationships I’ve built with my colleagues and the people I serve. Every day brings something new, and my years of experience allow me to solve problems efficiently and provide personalized, meaningful support to those who depend on my work.

As women in business and many now in management, we tend to encourage those who work for us to grow and learn. It is so important because these are the leaders of the future. My time teaching Med Tech students was extremely important to me. I did my best to help the students who were struggling with their classes. I encouraged them to come to me if they were not able to understand something. The doctors and nurses depended on correct values on their patients and, if necessary, to explain the results which they frequently needed us to do. I reminded my studens and later Med Techs who worked for me that doctors and nurses didn't always understand test results.
