About Dina
Dina Besic is a retail strategist, entrepreneur, and nonprofit founder with more than 12 years of experience leading national retail businesses at Walgreens Boots Alliance, where she managed over $6.2 billion in sales across more than 8,000 stores. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation for driving category growth, strengthening partnerships, and helping brands succeed in highly competitive retail environments.
Drawing on her extensive buyer-side experience, Besic founded The Retail Launch Co., a retail growth and brokerage firm that helps emerging and established CPG brands navigate retail expansion through buyer-informed strategy, commercialization, retail readiness, and strategic retail representation. Having spent more than a decade evaluating products, category strategies, and growth opportunities from the retailer's side of the table, she brings a unique perspective that helps brands understand not only how to get on shelf, but what it takes to stay there.
Beyond her commercial work, Besic is the founder and executive director of Maxwell's Toy Box, a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit inspired by her son Max's leukemia journey. Since 2023, the organization has delivered more than 8,500+ toys and 4,500+ Joy Packages to children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. Through both organizations, Besic is passionate about creating meaningful impact, helping brands grow sustainably while ensuring children facing cancer have access to comfort, joy, and support throughout treatment.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dina
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to faith, perseverance, and a genuine passion for the work I do. I've always believed that when you care deeply about something, you're willing to put in the extra effort, continue learning, and stay committed even when challenges arise.
Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to learn from incredible mentors and build strong relationships with colleagues, partners, and friends who have supported and challenged me along the way. Those relationships have shaped both my personal and professional growth.
Some of my greatest lessons have come during difficult seasons, including navigating my son's cancer journey while continuing to lead, build, and serve others. Those experiences reinforced the importance of resilience, perspective, and focusing on what truly matters.
Most importantly, I have an incredibly supportive husband and family whose encouragement have made it possible for me to pursue ambitious goals.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of career advice I've ever received was that career growth doesn't always have to be linear. Early in my career, I took several lateral moves across different buying desks rather than focusing solely on climbing the ladder.
At the time, those moves didn't always look like promotions, but they gave me exposure to different categories, business challenges, and ways of thinking.
Looking back, those experiences broadened my perspective, strengthened my skill set, and ultimately prepared me for larger leadership opportunities. They also taught me that sometimes the fastest way to grow is not by moving up, but by expanding your knowledge, experience, and understanding of the business.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice would be to stay curious and never stop learning. Take the time to understand the business beyond your immediate role, including your customers, the financials, and what drives decision-making across the organization. The more you understand how all the pieces fit together, the more valuable you become.
I would also encourage young women to be confident in their perspective and not wait until they feel perfectly prepared before taking on new opportunities. Some of the greatest growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone and trust your ability to learn along the way.
Finally, be yourself. You don't need to fit a certain mold to be successful. Some of the most effective leaders are the ones who bring their own perspective, values, and authenticity to the table.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities right now is the continued growth of emerging brands that are solving real consumer needs. Today's consumers are more informed than ever and are actively seeking products that align with their lifestyles, values, and wellness goals. As a result, retailers have an opportunity to bring more innovation and differentiation to their assortments.
At the same time, the retail environment remains highly competitive. For brands, the challenge is no longer simply getting on shelf. It's building a sustainable business that can support long-term growth through strong execution, operational readiness, and a clear value proposition. The brands that succeed are the ones that understand both the customer and the realities of retail.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Faith, integrity, and service are the values that guide both my work and personal life. I believe in doing what you say you're going to do, treating people with respect, and building relationships based on trust.
I also value compassion and perspective. Some of life's most challenging experiences have reinforced the importance of supporting others, leading with empathy, and focusing on what truly matters.
Whether I'm working with a brand, supporting a nonprofit partner, or spending time with my family, I strive to approach every relationship with honesty, collaboration, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.
