Her Story

About Dominique

Dominique Sutton serves as a consultant to AI founders in the tech AI native startup space, a field she entered about a year and a half to two years ago after beginning her career in government with the United States Senate and the Department of the Interior, then moving into geotechnical, offshore wind, and renewables sectors. In her current role, she helps founders develop AI-generated or AI-focused products for SaaS across industries including renewables, raw minerals, and liquor, guiding them from zero to one by building team foundations, securing fundraising and VC exposure, and refining pitch decks. She attributes her rapid rise, including quick promotions to operations coordinator and chief of staff in her first startup, to the School of Hard Knocks, which taught her to apply formal education practically and read nuances in solutions. Sutton earned her undergraduate degree in Mass Communications from Norfolk State University, a Master's of Business Intelligence from Savannah College of Art and Design with a focus on creative business leadership, and is pursuing a Master's of Legal Studies in Intellectual Property Law at Vanderbilt University. She also holds certifications in IVA for Marketing Analytics, Content Marketing Institute Digital Marketing, and several Agile methodologies. Active in professional communities, she is a member of the National Committee for Negro Women, the National Black MBA Society, the Tidewater Forensics League, and Women in AI. Beyond her career, she has volunteered for nine years as a beekeeper and pollinator educator with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and serves as a volunteer judge for the Tidewater Forensics League.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dominique

01What do you attribute your success to?

The School of Hard Knocks has taught me the rawness of how to actually apply my formal education. It taught me how to read nuances and understand the solution. I wouldn't have been successful if I wasn't thrusted in that environment.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice came from the EEO of the Black Wealth Fund who told me that I was entitled in a good way, knowing who I am and what rooms I belong in is my biggest asset. Lead with your entitlement and know that you belong in the spaces that you're curious about.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

This role isn't made for women so you have to prove your value. Learn how to build in public and share. Don't hoard your knowledge or expertise. Be open to sharing more and showing people that you know what you're doing. Build your rapport and trust by proving yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The largest opportunities come with adapting to technologies like AI that could be a bit apprehensive. AI is going to scale regardless. The challenge is knowing what to implement AI into. Find ways to innovate and share by networking and finding your community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being personable, like a social chameleon, knowing how to be presentable and adaptable in any room. Networking by meeting people where they are. Being a good listener to learn new perspectives and be seen as personable.
