Ten minutes with Donna
01What do you attribute your success to?
The Journey — Faith, Resilience & Purpose
When I reflect on my journey, I can honestly say that I am where I am today because of God, my mother and father, and the extraordinary mentors who have influenced my life across many different areas. Each person and each experience has contributed to the woman, leader, speaker, and entrepreneur I have become.
My journey certainly does not look the way I once imagined it would. It has been filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, unexpected transitions, breakthroughs, setbacks, victories, and moments when I had to rise from some of the lowest places in my life. But I have learned that the journey itself is what gives you a story worth telling.
Without adversity, there is often no testimony. Without obstacles, there is no evidence of perseverance. Without challenges, there may be no opportunity to discover the depth of your own strength.
I have a story to tell.
It is a story shaped by adversity, obstacles, disappointments, blockages, struggles, sacrifice, perseverance, and pain. There were moments when I had to endure circumstances I never anticipated and overcome challenges I never asked for. There were disappointments that tested my confidence, experiences that challenged my faith, and seasons that required me to keep moving forward when the path ahead was anything but clear.
But every chapter taught me something.
Every obstacle developed another dimension of my character. Every disappointment gave me greater discernment. Every struggle strengthened my resilience. Every painful experience became part of the wisdom I now carry and the story I have the privilege of sharing with others.
As a woman, I have also navigated environments where leadership and professional opportunity have historically been influenced by male-dominated structures and expectations. At the same time, my experience has been shaped by being an African American woman, creating an intersection of challenges and responsibilities involving women's advancement, civil rights, equality, representation, and professional empowerment.
I have had to understand how to navigate multiple dimensions of identity and leadership simultaneously—not allowing those circumstances to define my limitations, but learning how to transform them into strength, advocacy, leadership, and purpose.
My journey has taught me that adversity does not have to become your identity. It can become your training ground.
The obstacles that were intended to discourage me became opportunities to develop greater resilience. The doors that did not open taught me to build new doors. The disappointments taught me discernment. The struggles taught me endurance. And the painful chapters taught me compassion for people who are fighting battles others cannot see.
Today, I do not simply tell a story about where I have been. I tell a story about what I have overcome, what I have learned, and what I have become.
My life is a testament to the power of faith, mentorship, perseverance, resilience, and purpose. And I believe the experiences that shaped my journey were not merely obstacles to survive—they became the foundation from which I could empower others, inspire others, advocate for others, and help others recognize the possibilities within their own lives.
There is power in the journey.
There is power in the struggle.
There is power in surviving the chapters you never thought you would have to live through—and then discovering that those very chapters gave you a story worth telling.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Adventure, Growth & Getting Outside the Comfort Zone
Get out of your comfort zone and maintain an adventurous spirit.
I believe meaningful growth begins when you are willing to step beyond what is familiar. Staying comfortable may feel secure, but stepping into new experiences creates opportunities to discover abilities, perspectives, relationships, and possibilities you may never have encountered otherwise.
An adventurous spirit is not simply about traveling or trying something new. It is about maintaining the curiosity, courage, openness, and willingness to explore that keep you evolving.
Take the opportunity. Enter the room. Meet new people. Learn from different cultures. Accept the challenge. Ask questions. Try something you have never done before. And when the path takes an unexpected turn, remain adaptable enough to find the opportunity within the experience.
Some of the greatest lessons in life come from places we never planned to go and experiences we never expected to have.
Growth requires movement. Opportunity requires courage. Excellence requires continuous development.
Never become so comfortable with where you are that you stop discovering where you can go.
Lifelong Learning & Continuous Growth
Learning is a lifelong process.
I believe we should never stop learning, growing, exploring, and expanding our understanding of the world around us. Every experience, every relationship, every challenge, every success, and every setback has the potential to become a classroom.
Lifelong learning means remaining curious, teachable, adaptable, and intellectually engaged. It is the willingness to seek knowledge from books, mentors, leaders, diverse cultures, professional experiences, and real-life encounters.
Some of the most valuable education does not come from a classroom. It comes from experience—watching, listening, asking questions, making decisions, taking risks, learning from mistakes, and applying what you have learned to the next opportunity.
I believe in continuously investing in personal and professional development. Whether I am studying leadership, business, communication, culture, entrepreneurship, spirituality, the arts, or new technologies, I approach learning as an ongoing journey rather than a destination.
You never graduate from learning.
There is always another skill to develop, another perspective to understand, another person to learn from, another challenge to navigate, and another level of potential to discover.
My philosophy is to remain a student and a teacher simultaneously—always willing to learn while using my knowledge and experiences to empower others.
Stay curious. Stay teachable. Stay adventurous. Keep growing. Keep learning.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Professional Speaking, Executive Communication & Leadership Development
My professional speaking journey began with the influence and encouragement of one of my parents, who recognized the importance of developing my voice, confidence, communication abilities, and willingness to step into opportunities. I learned early that practice creates proficiency, experience builds confidence, and opportunity develops capacity.
My parents opened doors for me to practice speaking in a variety of environments—including church, community organizations, international radio, professional concerts, corporate settings, conferences, and special events. Those early opportunities became the foundation for a career in professional speaking, executive communication, training, and keynote presentations.
A significant turning point occurred during my corporate career with Citi, where I had the opportunity to be mentored by the CEO. Working within a large organization with approximately 20,000 employees, I was encouraged to strengthen my leadership and executive communication capabilities through Toastmasters International.
That recommendation became transformational.
I pursued Toastmasters not simply as a speaking activity, but as a deliberate leadership-development and executive-communication strategy. Through disciplined practice, competition, organizational leadership, and continuous development, I advanced my communication and leadership capabilities.
My Toastmasters accomplishments included:
- Competent Communicator Silver
- Competent Leadership Silver
- Outstanding Leadership recognition
- Vice President Public Relations leadership
- International Speech Contest participation at Area and District levels
- Humorous Speech Contest participation at Area and District levels
- Recognition for leadership, communication, presentation, and organizational engagement
- Selection/listing with the Toastmasters International Speakers Bureau, District 25
These experiences expanded my ability to communicate with diverse audiences, deliver persuasive presentations, facilitate engagement, command a room, articulate complex ideas, and translate concepts into actionable messages.
My development subsequently expanded beyond Toastmasters into the professional speaking marketplace. I became associated with professional speaking platforms and organizations, including Celebrity Talent International and eSpeakers, while pursuing opportunities in executive speaking, keynote speaking, corporate training, professional development, leadership communication, and motivational speaking.
The Executive Speaker Development Philosophy
I believe becoming an exceptional speaker requires much more than standing behind a podium. It requires intentional development, observation, mentorship, practice, experience, and continuous refinement.
One of the most powerful forms of mentorship is learning through books. Reading allows you to gain insight into the thinking, experiences, philosophies, strategies, and decision-making processes of accomplished individuals. You are not simply learning what they did—you are studying how they think.
Another form of mentorship is direct exposure to great speakers. Listen to diverse speakers. Study different communication styles. Observe how they structure a message, establish credibility, tell stories, create emotional connection, communicate ideas, engage an audience, and transition from one concept to another.
Then there is personal mentorship—learning directly from someone who is willing to invest their time, experience, wisdom, and perspective into your development.
One-on-one mentorship provides something uniquely valuable: the opportunity to understand the thought process behind the communication. You learn not only what a person says, but why they say it, how they formulate their ideas, how they approach challenges, how they make decisions, and how their thinking translates into action.
But ultimately, development requires execution.
You have to get in the room.
You have to step onto the platform.
You have to accept the opportunity—even when you do not feel completely ready.
Sometimes that means volunteering before you are paid. It means speaking at community events, churches, schools, organizations, conferences, panels, meetings, radio programs, and professional events simply to gain the experience. Every platform becomes a classroom.
Experience creates credibility. Practice creates mastery. Exposure creates opportunity.
My philosophy is simple: get into the arena.
Start somewhere. Speak somewhere. Serve somewhere. Volunteer. Practice. Study exceptional communicators. Seek mentors. Read. Listen. Observe. Refine your message. Learn your audience. Develop your executive presence. Then continue advancing.
The objective is not merely to become someone who can speak.
The objective is to become a trusted communicator, compelling storyteller, strategic thought partner, executive presenter, transformational trainer, and keynote speaker capable of moving people from information to insight and from insight to action.
That philosophy has shaped my evolution from a developing communicator into an experienced professional speaker with a diverse portfolio encompassing executive speaking, keynote presentations, corporate training, leadership development, motivational speaking, professional entertainment, media, community engagement, and international audiences.
Mentorship, Mastery & Excellence
I believe in exploring, identifying, and learning from exceptional people who have demonstrated excellence in the areas I aspire to pursue.
When I discover a field, discipline, or opportunity that captures my interest, I seek out individuals who have already developed significant expertise and achievement within that arena. I study their journey, listen to their insights, learn from their experiences, and seek to understand the principles, disciplines, and decisions that contributed to their success.
Mentorship is intentional learning.
Sometimes mentorship comes through direct relationships and one-on-one guidance. Sometimes it comes through books, interviews, speeches, courses, observation, professional experiences, or simply studying the work of extraordinary individuals.
I am particularly interested in understanding not only what exceptional people accomplished, but how they think—their mindset, decision-making, preparation, communication, discipline, creativity, resilience, and approach to continuous improvement.
My philosophy is to find excellence, study excellence, learn from excellence, and apply those lessons to my own journey.
I believe you do not have to reinvent every wheel. You can learn from those who have traveled the road before you, while developing your own authentic voice, perspective, and methodology.
The goal is not to become a copy of someone else.
The goal is to learn from exceptional people, incorporate proven principles, develop your own strengths, and become exceptional in your own right.
Explore. Seek mentors. Study greatness. Remain teachable. Apply what you learn. Keep evolving.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The Biggest Challenges & Opportunities in My Field
One of the greatest challenges I see today is learning how to maximize the value of our most limited resource: time.
In business, leadership, entrepreneurship, speaking, and life, we can recover money, rebuild businesses, develop new skills, and create new opportunities—but we cannot recover yesterday. Time requires intentional stewardship.
As a business leader and professional speaker, I believe one of the most important conversations we can have is about achievement without losing the quality of our lives in the process.
Time Is a Leadership Asset
Today's professionals are navigating accelerated change, demanding careers, technological transformation, global competition, and increasingly complex personal responsibilities. The challenge is not simply accomplishing more. It is determining what deserves our time, attention, energy, and presence.
Success should include the ability to build something meaningful while still having the time and capacity to experience it.
That means learning how to prioritize, delegate, establish boundaries, focus on what matters most, and intentionally create space for family, health, relationships, rest, and personal fulfillment.
Living Healthy, Strong & Purposefully
Another important challenge is maintaining the physical, emotional, and spiritual capacity necessary to pursue long-term goals.
I believe in living healthy, strong, active, and purposefully—not simply surviving life, but actively participating in it.
My perspective has been deeply shaped by my experience as a cancer survivor and advocate. I embrace the language of being a cancer thriver, because thriving represents more than getting through an experience. It represents continuing to live, grow, create, contribute, love, and pursue purpose.
The goal is not merely longevity.
It is quality of life, vitality, resilience, meaningful relationships, and purposeful living.
Global Cognition & Business Achievement
I also believe businesses and leaders must develop a worldwide cognition—the ability to think beyond one's immediate environment and understand different cultures, markets, perspectives, communication styles, technologies, and economic realities.
Global business requires more than knowing how to sell a product or deliver a service. It requires cultural intelligence, global awareness, adaptability, relationship capital, strategic communication, and the ability to recognize opportunities across diverse markets and communities.
The modern leader must be able to think locally while understanding the global landscape.
Family, Relationships & What Matters Most
Perhaps one of the most profound challenges is remembering that professional achievement is only one dimension of a successful life.
There comes a point when you begin to understand that time with family cannot simply be postponed until after the next accomplishment, promotion, business milestone, speaking engagement, or financial goal.
At 54, I have an even greater appreciation for the importance of being intentional about the people I love—family, a husband, children, relationships, and the people who matter most.
There is a reality we all eventually confront: we do not get unlimited time with the people we love.
That understanding changes how I think about success.
I want to build businesses. I want to speak. I want to create. I want to travel. I want to mentor. I want to make an impact. But I also want to live.
I want to make memories.
I want to laugh.
I want to love.
I want to experience beautiful places and meaningful moments.
I want to be present for the people who matter.
My Philosophy
My philosophy is therefore not simply “work harder.”
It is:
Work with purpose.
Live with intention.
Protect your health.
Value your time.
Build meaningful relationships.
Think globally.
Create boldly.
Love deeply.
And do not postpone living until tomorrow.
Because achievement is meaningful—but a meaningful life is the greater achievement.
The legacy I want to leave is not only what I built professionally. It is also the lives I touched, the people I loved, the opportunities I created, the wisdom I shared, the obstacles I overcame, and the memories I made along the way.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Life, Love, Family & Balance
I believe that a meaningful life requires balance.
Professional achievement, leadership, entrepreneurship, and purpose are important, but so are family, relationships, creativity, joy, laughter, adventure, and love. Success should not require us to lose the ability to enjoy the life we are working so hard to build.
For me, balance means making room for the people and experiences that give life meaning. It means nurturing family relationships, creating beautiful experiences, expressing creativity, celebrating accomplishments, embracing adventure, and making time to simply live, laugh, and love.
I believe in the power of creation—not only creating businesses, programs, opportunities, and ideas, but creating memories, relationships, experiences, beauty, and moments that matter.
Life is more than achievement. It is also connection.
Love is life, too.
Love gives purpose to our accomplishments and meaning to our relationships. It teaches us compassion, generosity, patience, vulnerability, and appreciation. It reminds us that behind every title, achievement, and professional accomplishment is a human being who wants to experience connection, joy, belonging, and fulfillment.
I believe we should pursue our dreams while remembering to enjoy the journey. Celebrate the small victories. Laugh often. Love deeply. Travel. Create. Explore. Spend time with family. Build meaningful relationships. Experience beautiful moments.
Rejuvenation, Rest & Renewal
I believe that rest is not a retreat from productivity—it is an investment in sustainability, clarity, and overall well-being.
In a demanding professional and entrepreneurial life, rejuvenation, rest, and relaxation are essential. There must be intentional moments to step away from responsibilities, restore your energy, clear your mind, and reconnect with the things that bring you joy.
For me, rejuvenation is about creating space to pause, breathe, reflect, recharge, and renew. It can mean traveling, enjoying beautiful surroundings, spending quality time with family and loved ones, experiencing fine dining, listening to music, reading, exercising, decorating and creating beautiful spaces, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment.
I believe in working with excellence—but I also believe in knowing when to rest, reset, and restore.
Rest allows us to return with greater perspective. Relaxation creates room for creativity. Rejuvenation restores energy. Renewal allows us to continue pursuing our purpose without losing ourselves in the process.
A balanced life makes room for both achievement and enjoyment, ambition and stillness, productivity and restoration.
There is wisdom in knowing when to push forward and when to pause.
Work hard. Dream boldly. Rest intentionally. Rejuvenate completely. Return renewed.
Because a life of purpose should not simply be productive—it should also be beautifully lived.
Because when we look back on our lives, our legacy will not be measured only by what we built professionally.
It will also be reflected in the people we loved, the lives we touched, the memories we created, the joy we shared, and the moments that made life worth living.
Live fully. Laugh freely. Love deeply. Create intentionally. Leave a legacy that reflects not only what you accomplished, but how beautifully you lived.
Legacy, Impact & Purpose
One of the principles that has guided my professional and personal journey is the desire to leave a meaningful legacy wherever I serve.
With every organization, company, ministry, business, and professional opportunity I have been entrusted with, I have sought to contribute more than what was expected of me. I believe in going above and beyond, creating meaningful value, strengthening the people and environments around me, and leaving each organization better positioned for continued success.
For me, legacy is not simply about titles, accomplishments, or recognition. It is about impact.
It is about the difference you make while you are present and the value that continues after you leave. It is the knowledge you share, the people you develop, the relationships you cultivate, the systems you improve, the opportunities you create, and the positive influence you leave behind.
I believe small things can make a significant difference.
A conversation can change someone's perspective. An introduction can create an opportunity. A word of encouragement can restore someone's confidence. A process improvement can make someone's work more effective. A mentor can change the trajectory of a person's life.
And I believe one person can make a difference.
You do not have to wait until you have a massive platform, a large organization, or unlimited resources to create impact. Sometimes leadership begins with one decision, one relationship, one act of service, one innovative idea, or one person willing to step forward and make a difference.
That philosophy has influenced how I approach both corporate leadership and entrepreneurship. I strive to bring excellence, initiative, creativity, service, innovation, relationship-building, and purposeful execution into every environment I enter.
I also believe that every person has a life song—a unique expression of who they are, what they value, what they have overcome, what they believe, and what they are called to contribute to the world.
Your life song tells your story.
It is reflected in how you treat people, how you respond to adversity, how you use your gifts, how you lead, how you serve, and what you leave behind.
Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect a life of purpose, excellence, resilience, service, leadership, creativity, and meaningful impact.
I want people to remember not simply what I accomplished, but how I made them feel, what I taught them, what opportunities I helped create, and how my presence contributed something lasting.
My goal is not merely to occupy a space. It is to leave an imprint.
