Her Interview
Ten minutes with Donna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the values of hard work, sacrifice, perseverance, and resilience that I developed from a young age. I have always approached challenges with determination and the mindset to face them head-on, embrace opportunities, and learn through experience. Growing up, I often translated for my mother and served as an advocate for my family, experiences that strengthened my communication skills, confidence, and ability to navigate difficult situations with courage. These early responsibilities shaped my work ethic and continue to inspire me to overcome obstacles, adapt, and continuously grow both personally and professionally.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received came from my mother, who taught me not to be afraid of challenges. She raised me with the belief that obstacles are opportunities for growth and that I should approach difficult situations with courage, confidence, and determination. Her guidance has inspired me to embrace new experiences, step outside of my comfort zone, and continue learning throughout my personal and professional journey.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering the industry to believe in their voice, trust their abilities, and remain true to themselves. It is important not to allow self-doubt to influence their decisions or limit their potential. As a first-generation American and multicultural woman, I understand the experience of entering professional spaces where others may not share the same background or perspective. I have learned that our differences are not barriers; they are strengths that bring unique value, insight, and resilience. I encourage women to embrace their individuality, advocate for themselves, and confidently pursue opportunities where they can make an impact.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in the education field is increasing representation and diversity in leadership roles. While the teaching profession is largely composed of women, higher-level leadership positions continue to be more male-dominated, particularly for women of color. Entering decision-making spaces where few people share similar backgrounds can present challenges, but it also creates an opportunity to bring new perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. I believe diverse voices strengthen organizations and are essential to creating more inclusive, equitable, and impactful educational environments.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are advocacy, compassion, and using my voice to create positive change. I believe in standing up for those who may not always have a seat at the table and ensuring that their perspectives and needs are represented. As a strong advocate for students, I believe every student deserves access to a quality education, meaningful opportunities, and the support needed to succeed. My commitment to service and equity continues to guide the way I lead, collaborate, and contribute to the communities I serve.
