Her Interview

Ten minutes with Donna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, perseverance, vision, and the practice of goal setting. I learned early on that "goals you set are goals you get." I have built credibility in the development industry by becoming an expert and a trusted friend and advisor. My success is measured by my clients' success. I challenge myself to grow personally and professionally and I embrace the wisdom gained from that process.

As a part of my legacy, and to support our corporate legacy, I am leader in transition and support our emerging leaders in taking the reins. My leadership style is to 'lead from the back' which allows emerging leaders the spotlight to maneuver and grow while providing the necessary support and 'safety netting' they need to be confident in their decision-making. This is a highly interactive process and necessary training ground to build the skills needed for success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most impactful career advice I have ever received has been to focus on learning and evolving, cutting through the layers to solve 'root cause' essential problems, and building authentic relationships that last. Be kind and productive in all that you do and do the extra credit., it's worth it!

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to advocate for yourselves, invest in your personal and professional development, and actively seek opportunities to learn, grow, and advance your careers. Spend time with people you believe in, with similar core values to yours. Ask questions, take notes, and follow-through with thoughtful and strategic action. Change is inevitable as you develop your technical skills and gain experience so don't be afraid to pivot and adjust your plans to stay aligned with your goals.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The land development field continues to offer exciting job and growth opportunities, particularly for women pursuing careers in land planning and engineering. At the same time, there is still progress to be made in creating equitable and transparent pathways for advancement and ensuring women have the support and opportunities needed to succeed. There weren't many female role-models in my field in my early career years, and I leaned on strong leaders with solid values for support and guidance. While I had to pave my path to leadership it was worth it for the experience and perspective I've gained. I am happy and proud to share that path with others and/or help prepare others for their pathway to success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are peace, love, joy, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, forbearance, and self-control. These virtues guide how I build relationships, approach challenges, and sustain growth and success.
