About Donna

Donna Tarpley brings 16 years of expertise in facility solutions, specializing in bridging the gap between clients and vendors through strong relationship building. She holds Law, Business and Paralegal degrees, initially cleaning industrial buildings to support herself through college before transitioning into facilities management. After joining CBRE, one of the Fortune 500 companies, she advanced within a year to a leadership position managing the work order specialists team for Fifth Third Banks nationwide. Donna attributes her success to perseverance, having balanced full-time work, motherhood, and full-time studies during college. She values work-life balance and companies that respect individuals, and she advises young women entering the field to confidently share opinions and to not be afraid of volunteering for high-visibility projects.

Ten minutes with Donna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would definitely say perseverance, because I had children before I went to college. So, I had to work full-time, I was a full-time mom and a full-time student. It's easy to burn out, and you really just have to focus on the end goal and remember why you started.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Be naturally curious, ask consistent questions, and always be prepared to explain the "why" behind operational decisions to your staff.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do not be afraid to put yourself out there and be seen. A lot of times, women feel like they have to stand back, to be more quiet. Do not be afraid to share your opinion. Do not be afraid to volunteer to lead the big project. Do not be afraid to have your voice heard, because you never know what opportunities that could lead to.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity and challenge both come down to knowledge of the field. Knowing your company’s mission, your competitors strengths, and how to provide clients with outcomes that exceed their expectations can be tremendously helpful in accelerating growth. Opportunities like IFM programs for facilities management training are very helpful. Knowledge is power, and when utilized correctly- results and respect follow.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

A great work-life balance is key, because as much as I love my career, I love my family more. The biggest blessing is a company that respects work-life balance, and also respects you as an individual, and not just a number on a team.
