Her Story

About Donnisha

Donnisha Lugo is a Sociology Professor at Cosumnes River College who has dedicated her career to education, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others. She began teaching in 2007 and transitioned into a full-time faculty role in 2013. Before entering higher education full time, she spent more than a decade working in Sacramento County as a social worker, supervisor, planner, and manager—experiences that continue to inform her commitment to understanding people, communities, and systems.

Beyond the classroom, Lugo is passionate about helping students and aspiring educators find their path into higher education. She co-facilitates a faculty diversity mentorship program, supporting individuals who hope to become professors, and also volunteers her time to mentor prospective faculty members outside of her formal responsibilities. Through interview preparation, professional guidance, and encouragement, she works to help emerging educators recognize their strengths and confidently pursue opportunities in academia.

Lugo’s approach to teaching and mentorship is deeply rooted in the values she learned from her mother, who became a mother as a teenager and demonstrated remarkable courage and perseverance. Her mother’s example shaped Lugo’s commitment to fairness, kindness, and lifting others up. To young women entering education, Lugo encourages the development of emotional intelligence alongside agency and confidence, emphasizing the importance of bringing their full, authentic selves into professional spaces. Her work reflects a belief that success is not only about opening doors, but also about helping others walk through them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Donnisha

01What do you attribute your success to?

My mom is my biggest inspiration. She was a teenage mother who had me the month after her 18th birthday. Her courage, perseverance, and example shaped my core values of treating everyone fairly and being kind.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to stay true to myself, lead with integrity, and never stop learning. I believe that being consistent, open to growth, and willing to take on new challenges creates opportunities for both personal and professional development. I also value building strong relationships and treating everyone with respect, because success is not only about what you accomplish, but also about how you impact the people around you.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

This generation is very emotionally intelligent, but they lack the security of owning their agency. I try to work with them on owning who they are, being proud of who they are, and showcasing that.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are integrity, kindness, perseverance, fairness, and respect. I strive to bring these values into both my professional and personal relationships by being dependable, treating others with compassion, and doing the right thing even when it is not the easiest choice. My mother has been my greatest inspiration and has shown me the importance of courage, perseverance, and leading by example, which continue to shape who I am today.
