About Donya
Donya Dawson is a two-time cancer survivor who founded Healing Roots, a Connected Community, a nonprofit organization one year ago to support cancer survivors, thrivers, and caregivers. Drawing from her own experiences with invasive ductal carcinoma in 2020 during COVID and a second diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer in February, she creates retreats for 25 to 30 people featuring therapists, body scans, sound baths, and healing oils. She also organizes community educational events bringing in hospital and university professionals focused on health and wellness, hosts monthly Saturday Coffee Chats, and honors individuals monthly on her website. Dawson wrote the journal My Journey Through Chaos to guide others through their journeys and volunteers with the American Cancer Society. She works a full-time job while undergoing treatment and partners with organizations like Target for her second annual community event on August 8 featuring 21 vendors.

My Cancer Journey
In 2020, I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma. My treatment journey included six months of intensive chemotherapy, one year of maintenance chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, a partial mastectomy, and sixteen rounds of radiation therapy.
Just two weeks after celebrating my five-year cancer-free anniversary, I was diagnosed again—this time with stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer. I underwent a full mastectomy, four rounds of AC chemotherapy, and twelve rounds of Taxol.
These Experiences Shaped My Purpose
My cancer journey taught me the importance of community, connection, and support. Whether someone is a survivor, thriver, or caregiver, none of us should have to face cancer alone.
That belief led me to create Healing Roots: A Connected Community, a nonprofit dedicated to providing resources, healing spaces, and support for individuals and families impacted by cancer.
