Her Story

About Dorcas

I'm a first-generation college student and the first person in my family to get a master's degree. My journey has been shaped by determination and the desire to excel, not just for myself, but to show others from similar backgrounds what's possible. I bring my absolute best to everything I do, focusing on finding problems and creating relevant, tailored solutions. I have an analytical mind that's very process-oriented. I always critique things by asking why something is happening, what the numbers say, and how factual it is. I'm a people person too, so being in HR and loving to work with processes and people, I couldn't settle for a very administrative HR generalist role because it wasn't demanding enough for the type of brain I have. I found my balance in doing analytics within people and processes, which is why I pivoted to become an HR data analyst. I think futuristically about how the world is changing with AI and what that means for the workforce in the next five years. I show up to my work with passion driven by love, empathy, and respect for others. I'm very results-driven and take ownership of everything I do, which makes me go over and beyond to achieve desired goals. People recognize my professionalism and how I deliver value, and that's why they want to be associated with the difference I bring.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dorcas

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first to God, because I believe that everything about my life has a supernatural power and force behind it. But I also attribute my success to the many connections I've made over time. I couldn't have gotten here just by myself. I had people who held my hands, mentored me, pushed me, and who still push me. When I think back, I ask myself, would I have been here without these people? Maybe, but maybe it would have taken me a longer time to get here. I honestly have to say that I've had some of the greatest people, like mentors and support systems, who have really encouraged me, shown me the right direction, and pushed me. Dorcas wouldn't be Dorcas without a village, pretty much. So I would say God and just a great community of women and men who have been very invested and committed to my growth and my success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is that determination brings success. As a young woman navigating your career, trying to find yourself in the big workspace and find what really drives and motivates you, one thing that always brings me back to my center is knowing that I can do whatever I set my mind to. So long as I'm determined about it and I put my eyes on it, I really can get it. And really, I have gotten it. Everything I have set my mind on and stayed focused on, I have achieved. So I would really say determination brings success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say rely on your network and your resources if you have one. If you don't have one while you're preparing to be that woman or to be someone like me, start to look around to find that community for yourself. And if you don't have it, Dorcas is right here, you can start with me. But really look into your community, the resources that you have around you, and tap into it. Also, just stay determined, honestly. Even if you didn't have all that it took to be there, if you just look for something and fix your eyes on wanting to be this person, ask yourself what does it take to be this person, and just laser focus on that goal, you will get it. Stay determined, have the right support and the right community around you, and always approach life and work from a very good place, from a place of wanting to add value. The moment you come from a value-adding perspective, you always think of what is the problem and how can I solve it. People want to get closer to you. People see that you're very driven, that you say you want to do this and you go for it and you get it. People want to be close to you and be associated with that difference that you bring.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My values on a broader level are God, family, success, and impact. Bringing that back to my job, I show up to anything that I do with so much love and passion. I would allude that to my faith in God and how that shapes my thoughts and how I show up in this world. People are going through a lot of things, and it's normal to see in the workplace that people just take the job as a job with no emotion and no empathy. But I try to show up to my job and with everything that I do, how I relate with people and how I try to drive impact, from a place of love and so much caution. Even though it's the business, you still have to treat people with so much love and respect. On the job, I work with so much passion, and that passion is fueled by love, empathy, and respect for other people. I'm also someone that's very results-driven. Whatever I do, I take ownership of, so I always show up to everything with the mindset that I own this. They trust me with this because they believe in me, so this belongs to me from an ownership perspective, and that makes me deliver the desired result. I go over and beyond when I have that agency and that ownership to make sure that the result is achieved and it meets the desired goals. To sum up, I would say there's passion, so much passion, and then I'm very results-driven. I bring that to everything that I do, and professionalism.
