Her Story
About Dorinda
With over 20 years in accounting, I've built my career through determination and adaptability. I fell in love with accounting in high school, but my path wasn't traditional. I became a teenage mom, got my GED, and went to college with two kids at home. What started as a summer internship for college credits turned into my first job when I was hired on the spot. Years later, while working as a controller for an electrical contractor, I completed my associate's degree, and I'm now just 6 credits shy of my bachelor's. Currently, I serve as a senior accountant and payroll administrator for the Bonattio Group, which my original company merged with in September. I love the diversity of tasks in my role. On a daily basis, I process bank feeds, enter payables, send balance reports to clients, handle accounting for multiple companies, process and enter payrolls, reconcile general ledgers monthly, and complete month-end reviews and closes. I'm self-taught on most accounting software and have successfully gone into previous positions to do full cleanups on software I didn't even know how to use, creating much better financial views for companies. I have extensive experience in processing payroll, and my coworkers often come to me with payroll questions. While I'm happy in my current role and don't seek to stand out, I'm always willing to help coworkers one-on-one, showing them why we do things a certain way and what changes can occur.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would basically tell them, yes, you went to school for accounting, but you know the book work. Actual work is quite different. Don't go in thinking that you know it all. Take your time and listen to what others express to you how to do things. I work with a variety of managers, with a variety of clients, and they don't always do everything the same. Be flexible on your thinking and come into it with an open mind. It's definitely a learning curve. I mean, you have the book knowledge, but you don't have the work knowledge.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty and accountability are most important to me. I try for perfection, but I'm only human. You have to be ready for anything in this field. It comes from day to day, it's always different, and you're not gonna be bored. That's for sure. You have to be ready to pivot all the time. I've always been an extremely shy person, and privacy is always been on the high point for me. I'm not used to standing out, but of course, everybody wants to get recognized for their hard work.
