Her Story

About Doris

Doris Batson earned a BFA and a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin after pursuing her love of the arts. She taught art across all levels from the beginning through college. After retiring from teaching, she founded the Kids Aspiring to Dream organization to support talented youth who often felt their creativity was undervalued in traditional settings. The organization offers mentoring through scholarship programs where students perform and showcase work, the Light the Dream Scholarship Gala and Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Gala that honor community leaders, and a Mentor of the Month program featuring speakers from various fields. Batson attributes her professional path to family values and faith, encouraging young women to follow the path God leads them toward.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Doris

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to family values, having faith, and putting God first. I try to stay true to myself and follow the path that God has for me rather than trying to emulate anybody else. As I've grown, I've seen how God has worked in so many areas and led me where He wants me to go.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them to follow your passion and follow what God has led you to do. Just follow whatever path that you feel that God is leading you to, because you can't go wrong.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are those instilled by my parents, especially faith and putting God first. My mother taught me to stay focused and prepare for the future even when you can't see it. My father was a pastor and visionary who loved writing, which inspired me.
