About Doris

Doris Melendez serves as an English as a Second Language Teacher in Pascagoula, Mississippi, a role she has held since 2006. Originally from Puerto Rico, she moved to the area in 2011 and taught herself English before beginning her career as an assistant teacher at a local school. She later earned a Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership from William Carey and continues to pursue further education. In addition to her classroom work, Melendez draws on her prior experience as a social worker for CPS to support Hispanic families and others in the community by connecting them with resources for college, financial aid, and other needs. She has also assisted with the Gulf Coast known violence organization to help women overcome abusive relationships. Melendez attributes her success to her family, godparents, faith, and a strong support system, and she values integrity above all in both her professional and personal life.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Doris

01What do you attribute your success to?

My family and two godparents who have been part of my support system. My own time and desire to be successful. It takes a village with God, family, and good friends who support you along with your passion, dedication, and real desire to accomplish something.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be independent by studying and having a career or trade. Get some kind of education because no one can take that away. Be confident, don't settle for less. Put God, family, and education first. Achieve your dreams and don't settle for anything less than you're worth.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I'm very optimistic and don't see challenges right now. If you pray hard, nothing is a challenge. Sometimes God is closing doors that are not for you, and everything works for the best.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity. It includes respect and doing the right thing when nobody is watching so at the end of the day you can put your head on your pillow and feel good.
