Her Story
About Dory
Dory Chang is a self-employed educator and Hawaiian Educational Specialist based in Kailua, Hawaii, where she operates Moani’s School of Learning. Since March 2026, she has provided instruction in Hawaiian language, history, culture, and traditions to children aged nine and older as well as adult beginners. Her approach emphasizes small-group and individual instruction, allowing her to create tailored and supportive learning experiences that encourage students to explore and appreciate Hawaiian heritage.
Chang brings extensive experience in education and individualized student support. She previously served as an Educational Assistant III with the Hawaii Department of Education for nearly six years and worked for many years as a paraprofessional and behavioral-support professional serving children with special needs and disabilities. Her earlier roles included supporting students in academic, home, and community settings, teaching social and life skills, collecting behavioral progress data, and participating as part of students’ IEP teams. She holds a Professional Diploma in Elementary Education and Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, both from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Through Moani’s School of Learning and her community activities, Chang is focused on making Hawaiian cultural education accessible and engaging. She has provided free mini Hawaiian language lessons, Hawaiian games, storytelling, and discussions about Hawaiian culture, history, and traditions at Lokahi Kailua Market. Her work combines her longstanding background in education with a commitment to sharing Hawaiian heritage, creating culturally meaningful learning opportunities, and supporting learners through personalized instruction.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value creating supportive and meaningful learning experiences that allow people to connect with and appreciate Hawaiian language, history, culture, and traditions. I believe individualized instruction and a welcoming learning environment can help students feel supported while developing a deeper understanding of their heritage.
I also value cultural preservation, education, community connection, and service. Through my teaching and my free community activities at Lokahi Kailua Market, I aim to make Hawaiian cultural learning accessible and encourage curiosity, participation, and appreciation within the community.
