Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr.
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the trailblazers and strong women in my family, my Geechee heritage, attending an HBCU which gave me a strong foundation, my environment, and my lifelong fighting spirit since birth.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was from my grandfather: 'If you're gonna do it, do it. Show up.' He emphasized showing up no matter what the task is, whether sweeping the floor or fixing a plane.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Take up space and grow intentionally. Go in excellence, follow the rules but ask for forgiveness instead of permission if it saves a child's life. Be a good person and smile.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Biggest challenges include defunding public schools, attacks on the right to read, lack of identity and culture in literacy programs, trauma-affected students post-COVID, and the high cost and inaccessibility of specialized training like CALT programs.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are showing up and doing the job right, recognizing people's power to change, incorporating identity and joy in learning, filling gaps to strengthen systems, and leaving the world better by empowering others.
