Her Story
About Dr. Angelic
I am currently a school principal at a K-8 school in Columbus, Ohio, and I also consider myself to be an educational leader and a researcher. A lot of my work at my school has been focused on my dissertation topic, which has been the secondary trauma of educators. Our students bring so much into the building as it relates to their own personal trauma, but how are we caring for the educators who are dealing with those traumas on the frontline? With my staff this is center of the work that I do. From this work, I have also developed an organization outside of this called the APlus+Dean's List, which really focuses on professional development for educators surrounding educator wellness, leadership development, and really just creating those wellness spaces where educators can thrive. My long-term vision is to be impacting educators and organizations on a larger scale, but really just keeping that wellness piece in the center of it, understanding that when our schools are not healthy, then our students can't thrive academically or socially. It is just so very important to make sure that the people who are taking care of our children are healthy. I have worked in nonprofit as well, including with Big Brothers Big Sisters where I was the mentor coordinator working with different mentor matches, as well as with a low-income housing organization where I was the director training individuals to teach other residents to to cultivate early literacy with their children, focusing on children ages 0 to 5. I was also at The Ohio State University where I was a program manager for a program in one of our communities, serving to increase family engagement, strategic planning, cultivating partnerships within the school and the community as whole, and removing non academic barriers . I then became a dean of students in my current school before becoming the building principal.

Ten minutes with Dr. Angelic
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think one of the biggest things is just going back to some of the work that I've done in research, but caring for others doesn't mean you have to neglect yourself. I think a lot of times, as leaders, we think that we have to be in all of the things, we have to do all the things, but then, especially as women, because we're holding it down in so many other areas, it makes it difficult for us to care for ourselves. So, it is very, very important to make sure that we're taking care of ourselves, and the strongest leaders are really not those who sacrifice themselves for everyone else. The strongest leaders, to me, are the ones who understand that caring for themselves allows them to continue to care for others. And so that's really important.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
There are three different things that I've really kept with me over the years. The first one is just really establishing healthy boundaries, making sure that I understand and others understand that no is a complete sentence, and that's okay. I give myself permission to disconnect from my work and limit that emotional overextension, recognizing that I'm not responsible to solve everybody's problem. For instance, I don't send emails on Sundays or Saturdays because I want my staff to be able to have that time and create those healthy boundaries. The other thing is just creating space for reflection, so being able to journal, prayer, meditation, therapy every week, just to make sure that I have those spaces to be able to talk, get things out, just so that I can also just protect my peace. And then just the last piece is just building my community of support. A lot of times, especially as leaders, women leaders, it can be isolating, so just having a community and surrounding myself with people who understand the work, but also, just understanding that I can be honest about my challenges without that judgment.
