Her Story

About Dr

My journey started watching my dad in construction. He was always finding the little details when he was building, and I was always there. That became a passion of mine. I started out in aviation doing HR for a contract house out of Miami, and I was also dealing with abused kids at that time. After my own personal experience being raped at a young age and keeping the baby, a lot of schools used to ask me to talk to the young girls to be cautious. That became a pattern, so I ended up getting my certification in mental health and substance abuse. I opened up a center called Broken the Hill Women's Center in Mississippi so people can have a safe place to confront their assailant or whoever done anything to them without feeling judged. I give them a safe haven. Now I've got two facilities and I'm opening up another one, and I travel. Sometimes people will have me come to their personal home to do counseling with them. I've worked with thousands of families over the years. We do adults too, because a lot of adults have been molested or raped by a family member and been carrying the guilt as if it was their problem. I let them know it's not your problem, it was the person that done that to you. I give them a safe place called the square, so when you get in the square, you'll be able to release without being judged, breaking that fear. On the real estate side, I've been a developer for 7 years and I'm a GC. I just moved into the building world doing ground-up construction, so I'm excited about that. My expertise is in how to structure business and building your home in your life. I look at real estate the same way I look at counseling. I tell people, you're not that broken that you can't be fixed. It's all about building, renewing, and restoring people, just like houses.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my children. I have 4 children and 6 grandkids. I was just looking at building legacy for my children and grandchildren. Each house or something I do, 5% goes to each child, each child gets 5% into something for their families. Just in case they have an emergency, they have money they can go in and get. It's about freedom for my family and building that legacy.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to pace yourself. That's been really important for me.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get a mentor. That's the advice I would give to young women entering my industry.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenges in my field right now are just making sure that people are prepared. A lot of people come and they want to be able to do something, but they're not financially prepared, or they don't know what they want to do. Their credit is not good. Some people will do applications to get a built house and have a 500 credit score. So that sometimes feels challenging to kind of walk them through trying to get their credit together, or to tell them that and disappoint them. But the awarding part is when the ones that come are already prepped and ready to go.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My values are honesty, and my integrity is everything. Integrity and character for me is everything. I'm just being honest.
