Her Story

About Dr. Katie

There's a persistent myth in business that people are the soft side of the equation. Dr. Katie Powell Hinitz has built her career proving that wrong.

Her work starts from a simple conviction: the companies that get the best out of their people get the best results. Full stop. Not as a nice-to-have. Not as a culture initiative. As a core business strategy. With a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, an MBA, and years of practice in high-stakes environments, she brings the science and the real-world experience to make that case, and then disciplined execution to make it happen.

She does that work through The Founder's Office, where she advises founders navigating growth and transition; through Kindred Consulting Group, where she works with organizations stuck in the friction between strategy and execution; and as a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA), where she helps business owners understand that the value of their company is inseparable from the strength of their people. As a continuous learned, she is always looking to stay on the cutting edge of what may affect her clients' ability to succeed. She recently completed MIT Sloan's program on Implementing Agentic AI, because how organizations absorb new technology is a human behavior problem first.

Outside of client work, she teaches leadership at the community college level, mentors women in business at UNR, and writes Growth By Design - a blog that gives leaders the behavioral tools to stop leaving performance on the table. From the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains, Dr. Katie writes, consults, and enjoys life from Lake Tahoe where she is outside in every season.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr. Katie

01What do you attribute your success to?

The fundamental belied in the power of human capability! Believing, and being able to prove, that getting the best out of people is how you get the best business outcomes has kept me steadfastly passionate about the work I am blessed to do each day. That conviction has shaped every client engagement, every classroom, and every hard conversation I've had with a founder who was looking at their numbers when they should have been looking at their people. I've never had to talk anyone into caring about results. I just have to show them where the results actually come from.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.

One of my early mentors, Kelly, shared this with me as she perhaps astutely observed my propensity to move fast toward big, audacious goals. But work, and life, is not a do it yourself project. I have learned, and continue to learn, the power and privilege and shared work for greater outcomes...and appreciate the slower-paced nature that comes with achieving bigger results than you ever could on your own.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stop letting anyone call your ability to recognize, appreciate, and enhance the human-side of work a soft skill. Understanding human behavior - what motivates people, what breaks trust, what actually drives performance - is some of the highest-leverage work in any organization. The leaders who can read their people and activate them fully are the ones who consistently outperform. That's not anecdotal. The research backs it. The results back it. Build that capability and own it without apology. In the world of more and more artificial intelligence, the emotional intelligence is increasingly a superpower.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity right now is also the most stubborn misconception to overcome: that people are the soft side of business. They're not. At the executive level, anything labeled ledership development is categorized as an HR initiative, and thus considered as a performative checking-the-box activity. But real human behavior change is at the core of daily leadership practices. Human performance is business performance, and the leaders who understand that have an advantage that strategy decks and technology budgets can't manufacture. We're in a moment where AI is changing how work gets done, where teams are under more pressure than ever, and where the difference between companies that thrive and companies that stall comes down to whether their leaders know how to get the best out of their people. That's not a soft skill. That's the whole game.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The three values I live by in life and work are Responsibility, Approachability, and Kindness.

Responsibility means I am a trusted partner in curating success, in the big ways and small ways. I carry my clients' goals as my own, and have a duty to keep my word, commitments, and convictions no matter the circumstance.

Approachability means I need to be a safe place for bad news to land. I consider all news data, not something to react to but to get curious about. The more space I can crate between stimulus and reaction, the better able I am to help guide a sensible solution.

Kindness is not saying the nice thing or what people want to hear. Kindness is seeing the pain, the desire, and the gap, and holding space for the growth that is required therein. I've never helped a client by telling them what they wanted to hear, and I hold myself to the same standard. Beyond that: genuine care for the people I work with, rigor in how I think, and the belief that doing good work and doing right by people are the same thing, not a tradeoff.
