Her Story
About Dr. Avis
I teach at four different schools, with three of them being in Schools or Colleges of Education where I work with both undergraduate and doctoral programs. I also teach in an MBA program, and all of my teaching is done virtually. Beyond teaching, I do administrative work at the University of Mid-Florida, where I'm over the faculty for that particular program. My grandfather, Wilson, was an educator with the school district of Palm Beach County, and I followed him a lot and wanted to emulate my life after him. One of my favorite teachers, Deborah Range, was my high school honors English teacher, and she was also impactful in my decision to become an educator. For a long time, I didn't know what my purpose was, but now my mission is to be impactful in everything that I do and to continue to walk in my purpose. In the next five years, I would like to become a president of an institution.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr. Avis
01What do you attribute your success to?
First of all, God, I'm gonna say that. But just life lessons. You know, just life has taught me so many different things. And just sitting at the feet of my elders. I love to listen to my elders. Life has taught me so many different things, and I've learned so much from having that relationship with my elders in order to gain more wisdom.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just be, you know, a beacon of light. Don't be afraid to walk into, you know, your authority and into your dreams, and always reach back and help someone else, because you are training, or you're preparing future educators. As long as you're going up the ladder, always make sure that you grab someone and bring them up, too.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, transparency, and accountability are the values most important to me. I feel that when you operate in those three things, your work will speak for you. Leading with integrity allows you to be accountable, and because we are human, we all make mistakes sometimes, but leading with integrity allows you to learn from those mistakes in order to be the best you can be.
