Dr. Jane Spanich, PhD

Dr. Jane Spanich, PhD, is a distinguished educator and leader in the fields of STEM and STREAM education, currently serving as the Director of STREAM and Silver Knight Coordinator at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With a strong academic background that includes a PhD in Theology from St. Thomas University and a Master’s in Liberal Arts from Rollins College, Dr. Jane has dedicated her career to fostering interdisciplinary learning that integrates science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, mathematics, and medicine. She is passionate about providing students with hands-on, real-world experiences, exemplified by her partnerships with institutions like Florida International University and the Miami Frost Science Center.
Over the past decade, Dr. Jane has made significant contributions to student development through both classroom teaching and extracurricular initiatives. She is the creator and director of TEDx St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where she encourages students to explore innovative ideas and build leadership skills. Her work as a private tutor for foster children and as a Silver Knight coordinator highlights her commitment to nurturing academic excellence and community engagement. I attribute my success to the support and guidance of my family, professors, mentors, leaders, and the students who inspire me every day.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to work consistently, even just 10 minutes a day, empower others in a way that’s heard, pursue what brings you joy, and never forget what it’s like to be in the classroom.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to define your own mission and vision, set clear goals, say yes to opportunities early on, release your ego, and never be afraid to ask questions.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge—and opportunity—in my field right now is staying true to my own mission statement while navigating the evolving demands of education and leadership.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work and personal life are empathy, authenticity, discipline, and kindness—qualities that foster trust and meaningful connections. Outside of work, I cherish spending time with my family, exploring the outdoors, reading with my book club, and embracing lifelong learning through research and travel.
