Her Story

About Dr. Juanita

At the core of my work is a deep commitment to ensuring every student has access to the opportunities needed to reach their highest potential, through strong systems, meaningful family engagement, and impactful partnerships. I lead with purpose, always keeping “little Juanita” in mind, a first-generation student who grew up with limited resources and without a clear roadmap. Education became my turning point. It was the place where teachers, counselors, and coaches saw potential in me before I fully saw it in myself. That experience shaped my belief that schools must be safe, affirming spaces where every student, whether advanced, navigating disabilities, or re-engaging after setbacks, is seen, supported, and challenged to rise.

Education didn’t just impact my life, it transformed it. And that is the same impact I strive to create for every student I serve.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr. Juanita

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, both in what I’ve experienced and how I’ve chosen to grow from it. I don’t believe in simply enduring challenges; I believe in using them as fuel for growth. Every obstacle has refined how I lead, how I serve, and how I show up in every role I carry. Resilience has not only sustained me, it has strengthened me. It’s the foundation of who I am and the reason I continue to rise, lead, and impact others at a high level.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is simple but foundational: always do what is best for students and never forget what it feels like to be in the classroom. That mindset keeps my leadership grounded, relevant, and focused on impact. I also believe deeply in treating everyone with respect from the custodian to the superintendent, because every role contributes to the success of a school community. At the end of the day, leadership is about people. When you lead with humility, respect, and a student-centered focus, everything else aligns.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering education is simple: own your voice early. You don’t have to wait until you feel fully ready to lead, growth happens in the process. Be confident in your perspective, seek out mentors, and step into opportunities that stretch you. At the same time, protect your well-being. This work is meaningful, but it can also be demanding. The most impactful leaders are not just effective, they are sustainable. Learn to lead in a way that allows you to thrive, not just survive.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in education right now is the rapidly shifting landscape of what school looks like. The student experience today is fundamentally different than it was even a decade ago. Students are navigating a more complex world, shaped by technology, increased access to information, and evolving social dynamics. For leaders, this requires more than awareness it requires adaptability. We must continuously evolve our leadership approach to meet the needs of today’s students while remaining grounded in what we know works. That means being responsive, staying informed, and leading with a mindset of growth and service. The opportunity lies in our ability to reimagine education in a way that is more relevant, engaging, and responsive to the world students are growing up in.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is at the core of everything I do, both personally and professionally. I strive to lead with strong ethics, always making decisions rooted in what is best for children and the communities I serve. Trust is equally important to me. I value being someone others can rely on, whether in leadership, friendship, or partnership. Kindness is another value I hold closely. In a fast-paced world, I believe in the importance of slowing down, being present, and treating others with care and consideration. I also prioritize balance and well-being. I believe you cannot lead well if you are not well, and sustainable leadership requires intentional care for yourself as much as others.
