About Dr. Kelsey

Dr. Kelsey Miller, PhD, BCBA, LBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Licensed Behavior Analyst, and the Founder and CEO of Autism Unchained, an Applied Behavior Analysis practice dedicated to expanding equitable access to high quality, evidence based autism services. Based in Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Miller has nearly a decade of experience in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and provides direct BCBA services to children and families throughout the Hampton Roads region, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News.

Dr. Miller began her graduate studies in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology before transitioning to Applied Behavior Analysis to more comprehensively address the behavioral and communication needs of children with developmental disabilities. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Behavior Analysis from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in May 2026.

Her published dissertation, Leveling the Playing Field, examined the effectiveness of a remote caregiver implemented play based intervention delivered through Behavioral Skills Training to increase independent manding in young autistic children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Her research reflects her commitment to reducing disparities in access to evidence based services while equipping caregivers with practical strategies that promote meaningful communication within everyday routines.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Miller is passionate about mentoring future behavior analysts, advancing ethical and compassionate ABA services, and supporting families through education and collaboration. She also serves as the Inclusion Coordinator for the Kids Ministry at Transformation Church Virginia, where she helps foster an inclusive environment that enables children of all abilities to participate meaningfully in church programming.

Ten minutes with Dr. Kelsey

01What do you attribute your success to?

Dr. Miller attributes her success to her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, a strong sense of purpose, and a commitment to consistency. She believes that success is not defined solely by titles or accomplishments, but by faithfully stewarding the gifts and opportunities God has entrusted to her. Her faith has been the foundation that has guided her through earning her doctorate, leading Autism Unchained, conducting research, and serving children and families.

She also credits her success to maintaining discipline and a lifelong commitment to learning. Dr. Miller believes that meaningful success is built through consistent effort, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Throughout her career, she has remained focused on pursuing excellence while continuously expanding her knowledge and refining her clinical practice.

Above all, Dr. Miller is driven by purpose. Her mission is to increase equitable access to high quality, evidence based Applied Behavior Analysis services while empowering families, mentoring future behavior analysts, and creating lasting systems of support for individuals with autism. She believes that true success is measured by the positive impact one leaves on others and by faithfully serving wherever God calls.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of career advice Dr. Miller has ever received is to never sacrifice integrity for opportunity. She believes that titles, promotions, and financial success are temporary, but a reputation built on honesty, ethical decision making, and genuine care for others will open doors that credentials alone cannot.

She also lives by the principle that consistency is more valuable than perfection. Meaningful success is not achieved through occasional extraordinary efforts, but through showing up each day with discipline, a commitment to excellence, and a willingness to continue learning. This mindset has guided her throughout her doctoral journey, her research, and her work as the Founder and CEO of Autism Unchained.

Finally, Dr. Miller embraces the belief that purpose should always be greater than position. Rather than chasing titles, she has focused on creating meaningful impact by expanding equitable access to Applied Behavior Analysis services, mentoring future clinicians, and serving families with compassion and excellence. She believes that when purpose drives your work, success becomes a byproduct rather than the ultimate goal.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Dr. Miller encourages young women entering the field to celebrate the small wins and expect the big ones to come with God. Every milestone, no matter how small, is evidence that God is working behind the scenes. Stay faithful in the little things, remain committed to excellence, and trust that He will open the right doors at the right time. Success is not about rushing the process but about faithfully stewarding each opportunity God places before you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Dr. Miller believes one of the greatest challenges facing the field of Applied Behavior Analysis is ensuring equitable access to high quality, evidence based services. Many families continue to experience barriers related to provider shortages, geographic location, socioeconomic factors, insurance limitations, and caregiver training, making it difficult for children to receive consistent intervention.

At the same time, she sees tremendous opportunities for growth. Advances in telehealth, caregiver implemented interventions, and technology are expanding the reach of ABA services beyond the traditional clinic setting. There is also an increasing emphasis on individualized, compassionate, and assent based care that promotes meaningful outcomes while honoring the unique strengths and needs of each individual.

Dr. Miller believes the future of the profession lies in innovation, collaboration, and mentorship. By investing in families, training the next generation of behavior analysts, and developing service delivery models that reach underserved communities, the field has the opportunity to create lasting change and improve the lives of countless individuals and families.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

At the core of Dr. Miller's work and personal life are faith, integrity, compassion, and service. Her relationship with Jesus Christ guides her decisions, shapes her leadership, and reminds her that every opportunity is a chance to serve others with excellence and humility.

Integrity is a value she refuses to compromise. Whether working with families, mentoring future behavior analysts, or leading Autism Unchained, she believes in doing what is ethical and right, even when it is difficult. She also values compassion, recognizing that every individual and family has a unique story that deserves to be met with empathy, respect, and evidence based support.

Finally, Dr. Miller believes in living a life of purpose. She strives to leave every person, every family, and every system better than she found it.
