Her Story

About Dr. Onika

For more than two decades, I have dedicated my career to advancing human rights, humanitarian action, international diplomacy, ethical governance, education, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. My mission is to transform global commitments into practical action by building strategic partnerships that improve lives, strengthen institutions, and promote justice, dignity, and opportunity for all.

I currently serve as a United Nations Representative (Vienna) for the Canadian International Chaplaincy Association (CICA International), an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In this role, I engage in multilateral dialogue, international advocacy, and cross-sector collaboration to advance initiatives aligned with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

I also serve in leadership roles with the Implementation Universal Declaration of Human Rights (IUDHR), where I contribute to advancing the practical implementation of international human rights principles through policy dialogue, institutional partnerships, education, legal awareness, leadership development, and community engagement. My work emphasizes moving beyond advocacy toward measurable implementation by strengthening governance, promoting accountability, protecting vulnerable populations, and fostering a global culture of respect for human dignity, justice, equality, and the rule of law.

In addition, I serve as Ambassador-at-Large for the Western Hemisphere with the World Diplomacy Organization (WDO), supporting initiatives that promote international cooperation, diplomatic engagement, peacebuilding, ethical leadership, humanitarian diplomacy, and sustainable development. Through this work, I collaborate with global leaders, diplomats, governments, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and development partners to strengthen partnerships that address shared international challenges.

I am also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Harmony for Humanity Foundation Inc., an international humanitarian and development organization committed to advancing human dignity through education, healthcare, humanitarian relief, peacebuilding, environmental sustainability, women's empowerment, youth leadership, economic resilience, and community transformation. Under my leadership, the Foundation has established strategic partnerships and implemented initiatives across the Caribbean, Africa, and other regions, supporting access to education, health services, clean water, humanitarian assistance, capacity building, and sustainable community development. The Foundation's work is grounded in the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals, creating practical solutions that empower communities and foster lasting social impact.

My professional experience spans diplomacy, international relations, journalism, higher education, humanitarian leadership, organizational development, governance, and public policy. I have represented organizations at international conferences, ministerial meetings, United Nations consultations, policy forums, and global leadership summits, contributing to discussions on human rights, ethical governance, education, humanitarian affairs, gender equality, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

As an international professor, I am committed to preparing the next generation of ethical leaders capable of navigating complex global challenges through diplomacy, evidence-based policymaking, servant leadership, and collaborative engagement. My academic interests include international relations, diplomacy, international negotiations, peacebuilding, ethical governance, humanitarian studies, leadership, and human rights.

I also serve as Principal of the CICA International University Technical Centre of Excellence, a City & Guilds Approved Centre, where I support the expansion of internationally recognized education, workforce development, professional certification, executive leadership programmes, and capacity-building initiatives that strengthen institutions and prepare professionals for global leadership.

Throughout my career, I have been privileged to receive international recognition for humanitarian service, diplomacy, journalism, education, leadership, and public engagement. While these honours are deeply appreciated, I regard them as a reflection of collective effort and a reminder that true leadership is measured by service, integrity, collaboration, and measurable impact.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr. Onika

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to an unwavering commitment to service, lifelong learning, and the belief that leadership is measured by impact rather than position. Throughout my career, I have embraced opportunities to serve across humanitarian action, human rights, diplomacy, education, and community development, always seeking to create meaningful and sustainable change.

My journey has been shaped by resilience, faith, discipline, and perseverance. Like many leaders, I have encountered challenges and setbacks, but each experience has strengthened my resolve to lead with integrity, compassion, and purpose. I have learned that adversity often becomes the greatest teacher, revealing opportunities for growth, innovation, and deeper understanding.

I also attribute my success to the extraordinary people and institutions that have trusted me, collaborated with me, and shared a common vision of advancing human dignity. Governments, international organizations, colleagues, mentors, community leaders, volunteers, my family, and dedicated teams have all played an invaluable role in the work we have accomplished together. Lasting change is never the achievement of one individual it is built through partnership, collaboration, and shared commitment.

Most importantly, I remain grounded in the conviction that every achievement carries a greater responsibility to serve others. Recognition and titles are meaningful only when they translate into measurable impact for vulnerable communities and inspire others to become ethical, compassionate, and courageous leaders.

My guiding philosophy is simple: use every opportunity, every platform, and every partnership to leave people, communities, and institutions stronger than you found them.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received was: "Never chase titles pursue purpose. When your work consistently creates value, credibility and leadership opportunities will follow."

That principle has shaped every stage of my professional journey. Whether serving in diplomacy, humanitarian leadership, human rights advocacy, higher education, journalism, or international development, I have learned that authentic leadership is built on service, integrity, competence, and the willingness to solve problems that matter.

I have also embraced another lesson that continues to guide me: "Leave every person, institution, and community better than you found it." Success is not measured solely by personal achievement but by the positive impact we have on others and the opportunities we create for future generations.

Throughout my career, I have discovered that influence is earned through consistency, resilience, and collaboration. Titles may open doors, but character, excellence, and humility are what sustain meaningful leadership. Every challenge has reinforced my belief that adversity is often preparation for greater responsibility and that our greatest accomplishments come when we remain committed to learning, serving, and lifting others as we climb.

Today, that advice continues to inspire my work across international diplomacy, humanitarian action, human rights, education, and ethical governance. My goal is not simply to build a successful career, but to build a legacy of service that contributes to a more just, peaceful, and compassionate world.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is simple: never stop investing in your own growth. Commit yourself to continuous learning, professional development, and capacity building. Every course you take, every mentor you seek, every book you read, and every experience you embrace becomes another building block in the foundation of your future.

Remember that Rome was not built in a day, and neither is a meaningful career. Success is rarely instantaneous. It is the result of discipline, perseverance, resilience, and the willingness to learn from both victories and setbacks. Be patient with your journey, but never become complacent in it.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that no one succeeds alone. Every successful individual stands on the shoulders of those who came before them mentors, teachers, colleagues, family members, and communities who invested in their growth. Seek out people whose integrity, knowledge, and experience inspire you. Learn from them with humility, and when the opportunity comes, become that person for someone else.

As you grow, remember to strengthen the systems around you, not just your own career. True leadership is about building institutions, empowering teams, and creating opportunities that outlast your own success. When you walk through a door of opportunity, leave it open for others. Lift as you climb. Advocate for those whose voices are not yet being heard, and create pathways for future generations of women to thrive.

Never be afraid to admit when you do not know something. There is strength not weakness in saying, "I don't know, but I'm willing to learn." Curiosity is one of the greatest assets any leader can possess. The leaders who continue to ask questions are often the ones who continue to grow.

Be generous with your knowledge. Share your experiences, mentor others, and celebrate the achievements of those around you. Leadership is not diminished by helping others succeed; it is strengthened by it. The most respected professionals are those who create space for others to excel.

Finally, always lead with integrity, compassion, and purpose. Titles may come and go, but your character, your reputation, and the lives you positively influence will become your greatest legacy.

Continue to learn, continue to grow, continue to serve, and never underestimate the power of one woman who is committed to making a difference.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges and at the same time one of the greatest opportunities in my field is moving from commitment to implementation.

The world has no shortage of declarations, conventions, policies, or global commitments. We have the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Sustainable Development Goals, international treaties, and countless resolutions that outline what a just and equitable world should look like. Yet millions of people continue to experience poverty, conflict, discrimination, human trafficking, gender-based violence, inadequate access to education and healthcare, and humanitarian crises. The challenge is no longer knowing what needs to be done; it is having the collective will to implement these commitments effectively.

This is why I am passionate about strengthening the bridge between policy and practice. Human rights must not remain ideals discussed in conference rooms—they must become realities experienced in communities. Diplomacy must lead to action. Governance must be ethical and accountable. Leadership must be measured by measurable impact rather than rhetoric.

Another significant opportunity lies in the power of collaboration. No government, international organization, or nonprofit can solve today's global challenges alone. The future belongs to leaders who build partnerships across sectors bringing together governments, United Nations agencies, academia, civil society, faith-based organizations, youth leaders, and the private sector to develop innovative, sustainable solutions.

Technology also presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Digital innovation has transformed the way we educate, advocate, mobilize humanitarian assistance, and engage communities across borders. At the same time, it requires us to address emerging issues such as misinformation, digital inequality, cybersecurity, online exploitation, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence. As our societies become more interconnected, our commitment to protecting human dignity must evolve alongside technological progress.

Finally, I believe one of our greatest opportunities is investing in people. Sustainable development begins with education, leadership development, and capacity building. When we equip individuals with knowledge, skills, ethical values, and opportunities, we empower them to become agents of change within their own communities. Lasting transformation is not created through short-term interventions; it is built by developing leaders, strengthening institutions, and creating systems that continue to serve long after individual projects have ended.

I remain optimistic because I have witnessed what is possible when purpose-driven leaders work together. Every partnership formed, every young leader mentored, every community strengthened, and every life restored reinforces my belief that meaningful change is achievable. The greatest opportunity before us is not simply to imagine a better world—it is to work together to build one.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my professional and personal life are the same because I believe true leadership begins with authenticity. I strive to lead with consistency, ensuring that the principles I advocate publicly are reflected in how I live, serve, and engage with others every day.

Integrity is the cornerstone of everything I do. Whether representing organizations internationally, leading humanitarian initiatives, or making difficult decisions, I believe trust is earned through honesty, transparency, accountability, and doing what is right even when no one is watching.

Service is not simply what I do; it is who I am. Throughout my career in diplomacy, human rights, humanitarian action, education, and community development, I have viewed every role as an opportunity to improve lives and create lasting impact. Leadership, to me, is never about personal recognition—it is about serving others with excellence and humility.

I deeply value compassion. Behind every policy, every humanitarian response, and every diplomatic discussion are real people with real stories. Compassion reminds us to lead with empathy, to listen before we speak, and to ensure that our decisions protect the dignity and well-being of those we serve, particularly the most vulnerable.

Another value that defines me is continuous learning. I firmly believe that education is a lifelong journey. I remain committed to developing my own knowledge and skills while creating opportunities for others to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. The most effective leaders are those who never stop being students.

I also believe in the power of collaboration. Lasting change is never achieved in isolation. The world's greatest challenges require governments, international organizations, civil society, academia, faith communities, and the private sector to work together with mutual respect and shared purpose. Building bridges has always been central to my leadership philosophy.

Resilience has been equally important throughout my journey. Every meaningful career includes obstacles, disappointments, and moments of uncertainty. I have learned that challenges often become opportunities for growth, strengthening both character and conviction. Resilience has taught me to remain focused on purpose rather than circumstances.

Above all, my life is grounded in faith. My faith provides the foundation for my values, my leadership, and my commitment to serving humanity. It reminds me that every opportunity is a responsibility, every blessing carries an obligation to help others, and every achievement should be used to advance the greater good.

Ultimately, I hope my legacy will not be defined by the positions I have held or the honours I have received, but by the lives I have touched, the communities I have strengthened, the leaders I have mentored, and the positive change I have helped inspire. I believe that when our values align with our actions, leadership becomes more than influence it becomes a lasting force for hope, justice, and transformation.
