Her Story
About Dr. Sabrina
I have been in nursing education for 11 years and currently serve as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Extra University, a position I have held for going on 3 years. In my role, I teach students, help them transition into clinical settings, supervise adjunct faculty, and work closely with the leadership team. My journey into nursing began when my mother fell ill in 1998. Watching how the nurses took care of her, I knew I needed to be in that field too, so I could give that same compassion to families when their loved ones are sick. Being at the bedside, taking care of individuals when they're at their lowest, encouraging them and making them feel loved - I knew I needed to be in nursing so I could give my same compassion and that same love and support. My most notable professional achievement is obtaining my doctoral degree in 2020, which was the best decision I made. I am passionate about helping my community and my nursing students especially, helping them to be better versions of themselves, because that's what was given to me.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr. Sabrina
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my support team and my mentor. There's a mentor, her name is Dr. Veronica Stevens. She's always been by my side through every walk of life, and she's just always there supporting me and encouraging me to be a better version of myself, always. She has been instrumental in my life, and I also have Phyllis Carter Goodman as a mentor who always pushes me to be a better version of myself as well. Takesha Underwood is another mentor who always brings me back to my faith.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to be a lifelong learner. This advice has guided me throughout my career and continues to inspire me to keep growing and developing in my field.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I can give anyone that enters into this field is to come in with compassion and love, and find that mentor. Find that mentor that's gonna push you to be the best version of yourself. Nursing is a field where you need to bring compassion and care to individuals when they're at their lowest, and having someone to guide and support you makes all the difference in your journey.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say the challenges are support for our programs when it comes to nursing. Funding would be a big challenge. But there's so many opportunities whenever we can get beyond those obstacles or those hurdles for the field of nursing, because there's all walks that you can do in the field, as far as bedside nursing, community nursing. You have so many opportunities, so many degrees that you can get. There's so many areas in this field, and it's never-ending, it's never gonna go away, because they need us alongside of the doctors. You don't just stop at becoming an LPN or an RN.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is very important to me. I value family to the utmost. Love is something that I value, because everyone needs love. Those are the most important values in my life. And, of course, my children, because I love to wake up and to inspire them on a daily basis. Just helping my community, helping those to become better versions of themselves, because that's what was given to me, so I feel like I should put that into my community, into my nursing students especially, helping them to be better versions of themselves.
