Her Story

About Dr. Sofia

Sofia Chavez, DNM, is a Doctor of Natural Medicine, cultural-based care provider, and wellness consultant with more than 25 years of experience in holistic health, community wellness, and integrative healing practices. She specializes in bridging traditional Indigenous healing modalities with modern wellness approaches, focusing on the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Through her work at Sun Valley Kitchen Community and Wellness Center and Compas, Chavez develops culturally responsive programs that expand access to wellness services for underserved communities, including individuals with Medicaid and those without insurance.

Throughout her career, Chavez has dedicated herself to promoting trauma-informed care, mental health support, and culturally competent healthcare. She is the creator of The Dance of the Flower Medicine (Danza Xochitl Pahtli), a holistic wellness model that incorporates ancestral healing traditions, natural medicine, herbal education, somatic practices, and integrative therapies. Her professional background includes training and certifications in natural medicine, biofeedback, massage therapy, aromatherapy, auriculotherapy, and other complementary health practices. She has also contributed to research and education efforts exploring the role of traditional healing methods in supporting emotional and physical well-being.

Beyond her clinical work, Chavez is a community advocate, educator, and leader committed to preserving Indigenous knowledge and improving health equity. She serves on the Colorado Natural Medicine Advisory Board and has collaborated with healthcare and academic organizations to promote culturally inclusive approaches to care. Through bilingual community services, wellness education, and partnerships focused on food sovereignty and holistic health, Sofia Chavez continues to advance a vision of healthcare that honors cultural identity, traditional wisdom, and compassionate healing.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr. Sofia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my spiritual beliefs, the guidance of my mentors, and my ability to practice self-awareness and reflection. Their wisdom and support have played a significant role in my growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to practice self-awareness and take a step back to observe before reacting. In a fast-paced world, taking a moment to pause, reflect, and be intentional can lead to better decisions and growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Spend time to strengthen your cultural awareness, cultural competency and communication skills. Community needs to sit in circles of people and providers that care about them, respect them and want the best for them.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Access and equity of care, financial limitations, communication issues, physical obstacles, cultural differences, technological exclusion for older individuals and systemic rules. These challenges stop people from getting the care and help they need.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are family, connection, and appreciating life’s experiences. I enjoy spending time at farmers markets, outdoors, gardening, fishing, visiting sacred sites in different parts of the world, and creating memories with my grand-babies. I also value the joy of music, especially attending live performances at places like Levitt Pavilion and Red Rocks Amphitheater.
