Her Story
About Dr. Tandy
Dr. Tandy Tipps, MEd, MPA, PhD, is the former Department Administrator for Investigational Cancer Therapeutics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, home to the world’s largest Phase I oncology program. She has held executive roles across the global CRO and biopharma landscape and brings extensive experience spanning first-in-human through Phase III oncology trials. She has also built strong relationships with leading academic institutions, integrated delivery networks, and community-based research centers around the world.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Tipps brings a distinctive personal perspective shaped by deep Texas roots and a lasting connection to New York City. A fifth-generation Texan, she also considers herself a New Yorker after spending many years living in Manhattan. She often jokes that people would never know she is not from New York until she speaks and they hear her accent. Outside of work, she is an avid cyclist, a passionate supporter of animal rescue, and an enthusiastic traveler. She enjoys spending time outdoors, working in the yard, reading nonfiction, attending rock concerts, and listening to heavy metal. She loves the water, especially when it involves a jet ski, and values kindness, strong relationships, honesty, and being direct and upfront with a NO BULL attitude.
WINNIEDEL ONCOLOGY was founded as a loving testament to Dr. Tipps’ father and mother-in-law, who both passed away from cancer within six months of one another. Through her leadership role in the world’s largest Phase I oncology program at MD Anderson, and through her work with cancer centers, principal investigators, and key opinion leaders around the world, she saw that even the most promising cancer research could lose momentum because of barriers to early phase trial launch in oncology and precision medicine.
That experience shaped the mission of WINNIEDEL ONCOLOGY: to help bring new, novel, and life-saving therapeutics to patients sooner. Through its optimized study start-up model, Global Oncology Site Universe, and proven, agile development processes, WINNIEDEL ONCOLOGY accelerates trial execution while helping biotech companies save time and resources.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr. Tandy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to authenticity, perseverance, tenacity, and hard work, grounded in compassion, kindness, respect, integrity, honesty, and transparency. I also believe deeply in the power of relationships — they are at the center of everything meaningful and lasting. Above all, I lead with a NO BULL ethos: being direct, truthful, and committed to doing the right thing.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I can give is to stay true to who you are. Be authentic, know your value, and never underestimate your worth. Keep going even when things are difficult, and do not allow bullying, intimidation, or negativity to stand in the way of your growth.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage women entering the industry to know their worth and never underestimate the value they bring to the table. Be genuine, honest, and intentional about building and fostering meaningful relationships. Believe in yourself, stay the course when challenges arise, and do not give up when things get hard. Most importantly, never accept bullying or disrespect.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in our space is simple: not enough funding is getting to the biotech companies developing promising oncology assets. That is not just a business problem. It is a patient problem. When innovative therapies sit still because funding is not there, patients lose time they may not have.
The opportunity is just as real. Radioligand therapy is gaining momentum, and increased investment in RLT is helping drive new treatment options for certain cancers. And when broader biotech funding returns, it has the power to unlock real progress across oncology. More funding means more movement, more development, and more potential therapies getting to patients faster.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, integrity, transparency, and doing the right thing are at the core of who I am. I believe in being authentic, being myself, and never conforming just to make others comfortable. Leadership means standing firm in your values, telling the truth, and leading with purpose. Just as important, I believe in helping others, making a real difference, and leaving things better than I found them.
