Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dr. Theresa

01What do you attribute your success to?

God number one and my dad. God guided me in my journey to give me the knowledge that I need to provide high-quality education. My dad taught me that you can come from humble beginnings with nothing and no education and turn that around and follow your dreams. He taught me about work ethics and that everybody is valuable no matter who you are.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You are never too old to learn something new. You can always go down a different path. Do what you have a passion to do. If you start taking classes and you don't feel like you're meeting your own expectations, it's okay to make a change.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to break into the industries that are still earmarked as a Men's Club. Keep steadying the course. Whatever ignites your passion, go for it. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is balancing work life and family life, going back to school with a husband and three kids. One other challenge is the availability of full-time faculty positions in colleges. One opportunity in my field is the flexibility of designing activities relevant to workforce demands. My dream is to grow the nonprofit in order to provide hands-on experiences for children and focus fully on giving back through education.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family and inspiring today's youth to be who they were meant to be. Coming from a broken home and a kinship placement, I want younger generations to know they can achieve their dreams regardless of background.
