Dwana Hughes, M.Ed., MS, is a dedicated STEM and CTE educator with a strong focus on equity and project-based learning in Title I schools. Currently serving as the MSAP/STEM+M Coordinator at Houston ISD, she leads curriculum development and integration in science, technology, engineering, and math, creating hands-on learning experiences that engage and empower students. Dwana collaborates closely with educators to implement bilingual and inclusive instruction, organizes STEM competitions, coordinates field trips, and fosters partnerships that connect students to real-world academic and career opportunities.

Her career in education spans multiple roles, including Health Science Teacher positions in Klein and Humble ISDs, and a Program Coordinator role at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Through these experiences, Dwana has demonstrated a commitment to student success, professional development, and educational innovation, consistently applying her expertise to improve learning outcomes and expand access to STEM opportunities for underserved communities.

Dwana holds a Master of Science in Health Science from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and a Post-Master’s Degree in Special Education from Prairie View A&M University. She is certified as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology and as a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor through the American Heart Association. Recognized for her leadership and excellence, she has earned honors including the Klein ISD Distinguished Educator Award and serves as a CTE Representative on the Campus Instructional Development Council.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my foundation in clinical lab science and the opportunities I’ve had to make a meaningful impact, including traveling to Panama on a scholarship to provide resources and support to high school students in underprivileged communities.

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from Dr. Wykesha Hayas, who, introduced through a mutual friend, provided guidance and unwavering support that helped shape my professional journey.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to put in the work, dedicate the hours, get involved in professional organizations, and find an amazing mentor to guide and support you.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values in my work and personal life are faithfulness and dedication—doing everything with fidelity—while staying engaged in my community, church, and love for music.
