Her Story
About Ebonie
I've always been surrounded by healthcare at some capacity. I come from a family line of nurses. When I first went to college, I realized, I didn't want to do nursing, I chose it out of obligation to my family, but I've always gravitated back to healthcare. I've done CNA work, Medical Assistant work, I've even worked in a dermatology clinic, I did Assisting Care living. I've always gravitated back to healthcare, so I just feel like being in the healthcare field is my calling. I've been in my industry for 6 years and 5 months, and it's been fulfilling, definitely. The one thing that truly grounded me and planted me in my company is my Leadership. I've always had great leaders with this company. Once I hit a year, I said, okay, I can do this. Once I hit 3 years, I said, oh, I'm not going anywhere. And now I'm almost 7 years in with 3 promotions, and it's unlimited. The growth opportunities, I see myself going up the ladder, because I have great mentors within this company.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ebonie
01What do you attribute your success to?
The one thing that truly grounded me and planted me in my company is my Leadership. I know that saying people say that they leave companies, it don't be the work, it be the managers or the leaders. I've always had great leaders with this company. I loved it. I have had the pleasure of being mentored by a few of the greatest individuals here. They do so well and advance and they plant and teach me what they know and help grow me. What I learn, I can pass that to other upcoming associates.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My best career advice, it might be funny, but those who know me get it. My best advice that was given to me is "Man Up". Because I have a fear of, messing up a lot. And my leader said, you know more than you think you do. So, just man up and go for it. So that was the best advice, because every time I try to talk myself out of something, I hear those words, and I just do it, and they make sure I succeed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I just want them to treat everyone equally, be themselves, and just be an example that they see in me, even better. Don't stop, don't let anything deter you from goals, even the small ones.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Every company has its challenges. My challenges, they're not hard challenges, it's not nothing that I can't overcome. The bigger challenges are the material challenges that we can't control. But if they do arise, I'm pretty sure we can work through it. It's always a solution to an issue. It always has to be a solution.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
To be a great leader, I have to lead at work and at home. I wear different hats. Like I said, I'm a mom and grandmom, so I have to be the leader for that in my household. And here at work, I have leaders, but I'm also a leader. I have to be available in every capacity, because I deal with different personalities throughout the day, literally, from the time I wake up to it's time to lay down, whether it's at work or home, but I take it all in, because as I'm learning, my associates and my children and grandchildren, they learn me, too, every day. People change, you know, over time, and daily, and weekly. So it's always a learning process. Always.
