Her Story

About Ebony

I started my career journey studying to become a business owner with dreams of opening my own daycare. When the pandemic hit and I had two kids to support, I received several job offers coming out of college, including teaching positions and one from Amazon. Initially, the Amazon offer was for San Marcos, but due to COVID protocols preventing apartment tours, I declined it and even returned the signing bonus. Two weeks later, Amazon called back with a position in Houston, which I accepted. I told myself I would use it as a stepping stone since it was my only real job, but I ended up loving it. Now I'm an Operations Manager at Amazon's IA Street facility, where I hold the site record for the highest PD card performance at 86,000 units in one day, a record no other manager has been able to beat. My typical day starts at 5 AM when I get my kids dressed and take them to school, then I head to work where I get everybody pumped up early in the morning by sharing the metrics we need to hit for the day. I spend my time engaging with everybody at work and chasing metrics all day. I'm also involved in Women of Amazon and an organization called BIN. What I love most about my work is the people aspect, leading people, encouraging them, and pushing them out of their comfort zones. I genuinely believe I'm a really good people leader.

Ten minutes with Ebony

01What do you attribute your success to?

I definitely attribute my success to my kids. They push me to be the greatest. I have a daughter who's [in her teens], and if you try to give her an excuse about something, she just doesn't accept it. She's going to challenge it every time. Having that kind of accountability from my children drives me to keep pushing forward and being my best.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Operations is mostly male-dominant, so don't be discouraged. There's not many women leaders in operations, most of them are males. Just don't feel defeated and don't be afraid to ask questions, that's one thing for sure. I know a lot of women don't like to go into male-dominant fields, but you shouldn't let that stop you. Just move forward and don't pay attention to that.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

For me, the biggest opportunity in operations is moving into higher level leadership. It's very stagnant right now, and I think it's because of AI taking over the majority of jobs and everything. We are reducing in the number of people, but I think the challenge is just being able to level up in this environment.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I really value the people aspect of my work. Leading people, encouraging people, and pushing them out of their comfort zone is what matters most to me. I think I'm a really good people leader, and that's what drives me every day at work.
