About Ebony

Ebony Donley is a dedicated educator, literacy specialist, and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in education. She currently serves as a middle school Language Arts teacher in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, where she supports students in grades 6 through 8, including those with special needs and cognitive learning challenges. In addition to her classroom role, she is the Founder and CEO of Literacy Innovations LLC, a tutoring organization she established in 2015 to address significant literacy gaps among students performing below grade level.

Throughout her career, Ebony has specialized in reading intervention, special education, and individualized instruction, with extensive experience preparing both youth and adults for academic success, including GED readiness programs. Her instructional approach is hands-on and interactive, emphasizing one-on-one engagement, games, and experiential learning rather than traditional worksheet-based methods. She has also served in adult education roles through Euclid ABLE and Cuyahoga Community College, helping learners strengthen foundational literacy, math, and communication skills.

Beyond her classroom and business leadership, Ebony is deeply committed to community engagement and educational equity. She hosts free monthly family game nights that bring together students and families for collaborative learning experiences focused on literacy, math, and problem-solving. Her work has been recognized through multiple awards, media features, and community honors, reflecting her long-standing dedication to improving literacy outcomes and making education accessible, engaging, and empowering for all learners.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ebony

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my deep passion for literacy and my lifelong connection to reading. I come from a family of readers, and I grew up in a very print-rich environment where books and libraries were a regular part of my life. That early exposure shaped my love for literacy and gave me a strong foundation that continues to guide my work today.

I also attribute my success to my commitment to helping struggling learners and my belief that every student can improve with the right support. I am driven by the literacy crisis I see in schools and by the opportunity to be part of the solution. My formal education, along with years of classroom teaching and tutoring experience, has also equipped me with the skills to meet students where they are and help them grow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

While I did not reference a specific mentor or individual source of advice, my career has been shaped by encouragement from fellow educators, community leaders, and professionals who have consistently reinforced the importance of staying committed to literacy development and student success. Their collective influence has helped guide my focus and strengthen my dedication to serving learners effectively.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering education and entrepreneurship to believe in their vision, remain persistent, and stay grounded in a service-oriented mindset. When you identify a real need within your community and commit to addressing it with creativity and consistency, you can build both meaningful impact and long-term professional success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field is the ongoing literacy crisis, with many students performing significantly below grade level, especially in middle school. I have observed over my 25 years in education that increasing screen time and distractions have made it more difficult for students to stay focused and engaged in reading and learning.

The greatest opportunity lies in expanding hands-on, individualized, and engaging learning approaches. I believe one-on-one tutoring, interactive activities, and community-based programs—such as my family game nights—can help re-engage students and close literacy gaps. There is strong potential to improve outcomes by making learning more accessible, enjoyable, and consistent outside the traditional classroom setting.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are service, accessibility, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed. I believe education should be engaging and not intimidating, and I value creating learning environments where students feel supported, encouraged, and capable of growth.

I also strongly value community involvement and equity in education. It is important to me to support families who may not have access to paid tutoring services and to go beyond the classroom to make a meaningful impact. Encouragement, patience, and consistency guide both my professional practice and my personal life.
