Ednita M. Wright, is a distinguished social worker, educator, therapist, and community advocate whose career has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals, families, and communities for more than four decades. Since beginning her social work practice in 1982, she has combined clinical expertise, research, teaching, and program development to address critical issues including substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, mental health, diversity, and social justice. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Empire State College, a Master of Social Work from Syracuse University, and a PhD in Social Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University. Throughout her career, Dr. Wright has held leadership and academic roles at institutions including Syracuse University, Cornell University, and Onondaga Community College, where she educated future social workers and human service professionals.

Dr. Wright’s impact extends far beyond the classroom through her commitment to creating programs and partnerships that serve vulnerable populations. She developed innovative substance abuse treatment initiatives, including programs at the Syracuse Health Center and Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital, while also conducting significant research on African American women living with HIV/AIDS and co-editing a publication on the subject. As a diversity consultant and educator, she has worked with organizations and academic institutions for more than 25 years to promote authentic inclusion and reduce barriers caused by bias and exclusion. Her current work includes providing therapeutic support to youth through community-based initiatives such as Project Rise 360 and sessions at Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center, where she addresses challenges including gun violence, sexual health, and youth empowerment.

A passionate believer in the power of community collaboration, Dr. Wright attributes the meaning of her work to the positive impact it has had on others and the recognition that her efforts have made a difference. Her dedication has earned numerous honors, including the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from Syracuse University, the Ralph Whitney Jr. Trustees Award, Social Worker of the Year for Central New York from the National Association of Black Social Workers, and multiple community service recognitions. Her commitment to service has also taken her internationally through humanitarian efforts in Africa and work with Partners of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago. Whether mentoring students, supporting individuals in crisis, or advocating for inclusive communities, Dr. Wright continues to champion compassion, equity, and collective action as the foundation for meaningful change.

Ten minutes with Ednita

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my passion for helping and educating others. I believe strongly in the power of community work, collaboration, and creating opportunities for people to learn and grow. My commitment to serving others has guided my personal and professional journey and continues to motivate the work I do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The greatest recognition and encouragement I have received throughout my career have come from opportunities to serve and lead in my community. Being honored with awards such as the Take the Lead Award from the Girl Scouts Council of New York, a Commission from the Kentucky Colonel, a Commonwealth of Kentucky honor, community service awards from organizations including the Syracuse Housing Authority and YMCA, an Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award, and recognition as a Successful Black Woman in Higher Education have reinforced the importance of dedication, leadership, and service.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women is to stay connected to their communities and look for ways to make a difference. Use your skills, knowledge, and passion to help others, because meaningful change begins with service and a commitment to uplifting those around you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges and opportunities in my field is working with young people affected by issues such as gun violence while also providing education and support around sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention. These conversations are important opportunities to empower young people with knowledge, resources, and guidance that can help them make informed decisions about their futures.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me are service, collaboration, compassion, and giving back. I believe in working together to support others and creating positive change within the community. Helping people and building strong partnerships are at the heart of everything I do.
